I know CMU is strong for its science and math. What types of students attend?

Also, what type of students are in Tepper... and what is it good for? Is it too quantitative and math based?

Tepper students aren't nerdy.

From what my business/finance friends tell me of their intern experiences, their quant. training from Tepper gives them an edge. Managers and coworkers are surprised at their ability to use computational tools to give a good quantitative analysis.

I know Tepper students in the Finance track regularly get jobs at investment banks. Aka Lehman Brothers, Goldman Sachs.

CMU is generally more quantitative than other schools in all fields. Kids here are pretty nerdy, if you go by a broad definition of nerd. Just cause someone isn't into computers doesn't mean they're not a nerd. It just depends what you're a nerd about... But nerds are passionate and interesting, so it's your call.

I would describe most students at CMU as hungry for success - we're not rich like many ivy kids, but we're smart enough to get ahead, so people here work hard. But there really isn't much competition within classes. It's just that kids here aim to get ahead in "the real world".

People here are um..
ok like, people just LOVE to talk about grades for some reason here. Grades, tests, homework, etc...
I absolutely hate talking about school work outside of classes but I've learned to adapt..

Tepper students aren't that competitive. It's mostly the premeds that are. But usaully premeds in other schools are competitive anyway.
The tepper stereotype is stuck up people.. they are known to study the least but earn the most money after graduating. A lot of my friends are Tepper though (im cit) because they dont talk about school work a lot and they're more chill (unlike the majority of cit and mcs kids)

It's unclear who earns the most money after graduating. CIT and CS make boatloads compared to Tepper, but most finance companies have a pay structure that includes a bonus, which isn't technically salary (but can be equal to or greater than the value of salary). I'm talking about undergrad. Tepper MBA's make a lot.

It's funny. The admissions officer told my group (when I visited in April 2007) that IS made the most on average...which made no sense to me. I was pretty sure up to that point that either SCS or Tepper would be the ones making the most.

Yikes! Is it really true people talk about grades that much? Which school are you in?

^^ regarding NoFx's post, i mean

Grades were released this morning. Nobody called me up to talk about them. I think it depends on your crowd at CMU.

People do talk about school-work a lot though, like what tests were like and what's coming up in their classes.
