I'm worried I might get rejected from everywhere bc I got a D in a pre-req for my major and it killed my GPA. I'm retaking the class next semester though and if I get an A it will really boost me GPA but the problem is acceptances/rejections will have already been handed out by then. So I'm thinking if I send in an appeal what are the chances of being accepted after initially being rejected? I'm asking this regarding both UC's and CSU's.

For the UCs: Unless your appeal provides “compelling and new information”, it’s likely to get denied. I was rejected from UCSD, appealed, and my appeal was denied. (In it I’d made a plea to show them my spring grades which would raise my overall GPA to higher than their Fall cutoff GPA used for eligibility determination.)

If I were you I’d set your mind on the UC that will take your GPA, unless you’re really set on a mid-caliber/high-caliber UC, in which case it’d probably be best to re-apply next year with your higher GPA earned through Spring 2011.

I’m not so sure about the CSUs, but I do know that many accept students with multiple Ds/Fs on their record who have GPAs in the 2.0 range.

If you get denied and have no new information, you’re pretty much screwed.

Appealing to only further explain information that’s already on your app isn’t going to do anything.

I had to appeal for UCI last year but it was after I’d already been admitted and screwed up on a date that resulted in my admission offer being withdrawn after I SIRd.

Well if I get an A in my retake of the class that will be new information they need to know about but I don’t know if I will have my official grade by the time I send the appeal which is what I need to know. My semester ends in mid May, when do I have to send out an appeal?

No, that won’t be new information. When you apply, the last grades that get calculated into your decision are your fall grades. After that, you only need to maintain an overall 3.0 for UCSD and 2.8 for UCI (going off last year’s numbers.) You’ll still need to turn in spring/summer grades, but they won’t be used to determine your admission decision since you’ll get that decision around March/April and your spring classes won’t be done until June.

When they say “new information” they mean something that isn’t included on your app. Your spring/summer grades will be on your app, they just won’t be calculated, and you can’t appeal to have them calculated. That’s not how the system works.

An example of an appeal that would be considered is if I had all the requirements, then got sick and ended up in the hospital for the spring semester and had to drop my classes, two of which I needed to fulfill my transfer eligibility. I could appeal to UCSD/UCI, explain the situation and see if they would allow me to take the classes in the summer instead. THAT is new information. Your spring/summer grades are not and the UCs choose not to calculate them.

I would 100% guarantee you that appealing in your situation won’t do anything. If it did, the appeals process would be swamped.
