How often do classes get cancelled? And what reasons?

Now I don't want to get into panic mode, but I just registered for this class that lists its instructor as "T.B.A."

There are 16 people registered out of 40 and it has a date/time and everything...but due to budget cuts, is it possible this class could be axed since it doesn't have an instructor, yet?

I remember that was the case at my prior CC, but I was wondering if classes that would be canceled are already listed as "canceled"(meaning the school has already done its share of cancellations and cuts for the quarter) and whatever classes listed now on the schedule are considered "safe" to register.

If it’s listed as TBA, it usually means you’re getting a grad student or associate professor (a professor that hasn’t really been hired).

If the class does get cancelled, the person who was suppose to teach the class will email you before classes start and give you enough time to find another one.

Thanks for the reply tr1p7s!!! A few questions:

How soon would the instructor e-mail us? Also, if I get notified, I probably won’t be within my registration pass time since the next one after this one is September 20 :frowning: so the classes will probably be all gone by that time, no?

I know I sound paranoid, but should I just register for a back-up class and then drop it when the time comes? The reason being is that I really need 13 units in order to secure a scholarship for this quarter.

Well, I had an economics class that was canceled earlier this summer, and I wasn’t notified. I noticed just from randomly checking GOLD (the instructor/date/time/location/final date all went blank), and when I e-mailed the Economics department’s adviser to ask about it, I was told that I probably missed the e-mail that notified students about the cancellation (I check my e-mail a lot, so I don’t know what happened there). What the adviser did was to hold me a space in another economics class, and once my pass time opens up, I can take it.

Then again, if the instructor just went to “TBA,” I’d think it’s fine. That happened to a Religious Studies course I’m also registered in (for this fall) - I checked the department’s website, and it listed the new teacher for the class.

I’d contact the department’s adviser (for that class) if I were really concerned about whether or not the class is going to be canceled or not before trying to get another class.

thanks flushmaverick! i guess the cancellations of classes are really a crap-shoot to predict…i tried calling them but to no avail. how soon do they usually notify you?

also, would they cancel a class if there weren’t enough people in it?

I think they would.

Okay, well I called them and they said the professor is visiting from Portugal. So far the class is only 15 people filled out of 40. I asked her if it was in danger of being canceled and she said, “no, it should be there this quarter.”

I know that ultimately the school makes the decisions, so is 15 enough people for a class to be there? Now that registration’s over, I really don’t want my first quarter to have a problem like this :(

Any opinions?

Registration’s actually not over, there are two more pass times.
