How often do colleges waive application fees?(besides for being poor)

Ok, everyone knows applying to a certain school can range from $0-75 bucks, and I plan on applying to a good a mount of schools. Add in sending SAT/ACT scores to each college and I'm looking at nearly $1000 just to apply. Thank goodness the Coast Guard Academy is free to apply to!

I've heard Northwestern waives app fees for high quality applicants. Now, I'm a good student, I might apply to NU, and have a decent shot at getting in, but they won't waive my application fee.

But would a school where I would be at the top of applicant pool and get some merit $, like FAU, LSU, ASU, 'Bama, South Carolina, Ohio U, waive my app fee? I sure they wouldn't just do it, I'd have to ask.

Does it happen? Or if I have to ask, they won't give it to me, unless they REALLY want me, which may not be the case at all schools, but who knows...

Thanks.

As far as I know, I think colleges only waive application fees if it’s a financial hardship. My sister and I are both applying to college at the same time and there is no way that my family would be able to afford all of those application fees even if only one of us was applying to college. Fortunately, we got the application fee waived for all of the colleges that we applied to. Saved around $800.

Many schools waive fees for applying online by a certain date or give out fee waivers on visit days. When you’re scheduling visits you could email admissions and find out what they offer.
