I'm getting a 80 gb Zune and I was wondering if I should pay the extra $10 to engrave my name on it, in case it does get stolen.

Well, if it does get stolen, how exactly would the engraving help recover it? Do you think someone would check all x thousand students at your college, or do you think you will just happen to run into the thief?

Is this a ****ing joke?

For $10, yes, get it engraved. You're at least as likely to lose it, leave it in your lounge, lend it to someone, etc. as you are to have it stolen (which, as long as you keep your room locked, keep an eye on your own bag, and keep yourself out of sketchy situations, is probably not very likely at all). There are a lot of possible situations where an engraving could help someone get it back to you: dropped out of your bag in a classroom, left in the dining hall, forgotten at a campus coffee shop, left in a friend's room, whatever. For these purposes, I suppose you could also go the Sharpie route.

Another random tip (and again, as long as you're decently mindful, you shouldn't have trouble) is that iPods are one of the most commonly stolen items these days, and the trademark white apple headphones are a dead giveaway. So with your new mp3 player, avoid "recycling" old apple headphones, or buying any white ones. Weird, but true.
