And do they ever get annoyed if you often have to do it at least once per assignment?

I've figured that I really haven't done this enough.

And do they ever get annoyed if you often have to do it at least once per assignment?

I've figured that I really haven't done this enough.

Maybe once a year?

Did it a couple times on a take-home test. There were a million errors in it.

I don’t keep track, but probably at least a few times a quarter for each class. I usually e-mail the TAs, though, not professors. I’m too intimidated to e-mail the professors unless I have to, and since the TAs are the ones doing the grading anyway, it makes sense to ask them what they’re expecting to see.

And no, they don’t get annoyed (or if they do, they don’t show it). I think they get a lot of e-mails asking questions, because sometimes they’ll send out mass e-mails along the lines of, “A lot of you have e-mailed me questions about _____, so just to clear things up…” So I don’t think you have to worry about annoying them, especially the TAs. It’s their job to answer questions.

Now, they might get annoyed if you e-mail them the last minute before an assignment is due, which is understandable, so just e-mail them early enough that they have lots of time to respond.

A few times a semester for each class. I really don’t care if they get annoyed because as far as I’m concerned I’m paying their salary. The least they can do is deal with my questions.

E-mail?

I just go to their Office Hours.

Simple, if you have a question, ask.

If you have multiple questions on one assignment, I would try to go to office hours, but I don’t see a reason for the TA/prof to get mad at you for asking questions.

That is there job afterall.

If you have a question on every assignment, maybe the material is too tough for you. Try looking into getting a tutor.

I’m a TA for undergrads. I would be happy if I had a student asking me thoughtful questions every assignment, especially if this avoids last minute meltdowns and people asking me to re-grade their assignments because they think I didn’t do it right the first time. I have a few students who come to my office hours every week to discuss the best way to organize their notes and I enjoy the conversations with them, and I enjoy seeing them do well on their assignments later. The reason I TA is because I like to teach, and I like to interact with students, and I do consider it my job to respond to emails.

If you’re asking the SAME questions every week, or they’re questions we’ve answered in class or the syllabus…then that’s annoying, but I’ll still answer politely.

As another note, though. You’re also not paying my salary - ha! So don’t even try that attitude. Your tuition barely pays your own expenses. You’re very likely not paying the salary of the TAs at your university. Probably their lab has a grant or the graduate school funds them, and a lot of us (like me) are on external fellowships. I could never TA again, and I’d still get paid the same amount. If there’s anything that professors AND TAs hate it’s undergrads who think we’re their employees. We teach because we like to, we answer questions because we want you to understand, but not because we’re you’re slaves or contracted to you.

I go to a smaller school and I email my professers all the time :)

I dont think they get annoyed…
