How often to keep in contact with waitlist?

I got waitlisted at Columbia, and was wondering how and how often to keep in contact with ones regional counselor. I know that you're supposed to establish contact, send an email of interest, show substantial improvements since application, blahblahblah. But afterwards, when you contact them again, WHAT DO YOU TALK ABOUT? Also, on that note, how often should I even contact the counselor? Does once a week or once every two weeks sound good? Lastly, should I send my updates formally through snail mail, or through email? I feel as though actual paper is more personal and convincing, but that might just be me.

Thanks!
