How optional is 'optional?'

So one of my supplements [Bucknell] has an 'optional' essay. When I went to visit Tufts they emphasized that optional essays really are optional, and not doing them won't hurt your chances. However, my guidance counselors stressed that optional essays are NOT optional.

So what do you all say? Normally I'd have no problem cranking out another essay, but I'm finding a hard time coming up with content for the essay. It's my last essay and then I'm DONE with college apps, and honestly I feel with my qualifications I'll probably get in.

Thoughts?

I am in the exact same situation as you. Bucknell really likes demonstrated interest, so if you want a better shot at getting in, then do the essay, i think itll make your app stronger.

Not optional. The only truth is this: it’s your option to be a contender. If you don’t write that essay, you didn’t really want to go. Sorry. I know those essays are a hassle, but disregard that (optional) message if you’re serious about the school. Just know that your competition will be somewhat deduced because some appicants don’t bother to write that optional essay.

Its not like if you don’t write the essay, you have no chance of getting in. It might not technically “hurt” your application if you don’t write the essay - just it will “help” so many other people who do write the essay, pushing them ahead of you.

Like the US World News and Report once said in their college tips.

“Optional Essays are not Optional”

I visited Bucknell, and I know that in their admissions presentation they DEFINITELY made it clear that they want you to write the optional essay. Like MDP14 said, demonstrated interest is really important at Bucknell… if you don’t write the essay, they’ll automatically assume that you don’t really want to go there.

what everyone else has said pretty much: if you do not complete an optional essay, it sends the message to a college that you are not interested enough in their institution, so why admit you?

Also as with what everyone else is saying about Bucknell…
The admissions representative who came to my school, his name was something like Jim Shaynak, literally said these words (he was a very funny guy)… “we have 2 essays one required and one optional but really… one required and… (waiting for us to fill in the blank) another required…” Why not put in the effort to ensure that the committee views you in the best light? Sure, it may be too late to bring up that A- to an A last year in English (i know there are people on CC that freak about that kind of stuff), but there still are things within our control that can make or break an application right now. Do yourself a favor and don’t slack off on any of your apps
