I wanted to sing "Someone Like Me" from Jekyll and Hyde for my college auditions. I hear that the musical is overdone, but I picked this song, not to go with the crowd or because it's the first song that popped into my head, but because it's appropriate, easy to cut, in my range, and I love it.

I still have time to change my mind. Should I?

And could you fire some suggestions for an upbeat? I was thinking of "I Can Cook Too" from On the Town. How is that?

I don’t think its too overdone, I mean I know its used but I can’t picture is being overdone. HOWEVER, I have been advised by my vocal coach as well as others not to use Frank Wildhorn in college auditions.

Did your vocal coach specify why?

Because Wildhorn musicals have somewhat (not really but somewhat) developed a large following. She compared his music to that of Andrew Lloyd Webber in that it may be overdone as certain songs are quite popular. Webber- Any Dream Will Do, Phantom of the Opera, Close Every Door, etc. Wildhorn- This is the Moment, Someone Like Me, Into the Fire, etc.

This is what she told me however, if you knock it out of the park, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

However you may want to take into consideration that Linda Eder has kind of turned it into one of her signature songs in her concerts. Signatures tend to be a no no.

I would highly advise you not to do it.
Wildhorn gets a sigh from the audition table whenever someone announces it. And anything from Jekyll and Hyde is overdone.
Plus it’s a bit slow-moving at times…you want a song that will knock their socks off the second you start.
