Well?
In terms of its prestige/reputation. Any ideas?

A little underrated. Probably due to the past policy of accepting most instate students with a B average. This ended years ago but the image lingers. The faculty and facilities are better than several higher ranked state schools. It has been in the top 3 of state research universities for many years.

good data for comparisons

I think that UW Madison has a good reputation as a academic school and a fantastic party school.

I agree with joev. I think it's underrated but not to those who count (like graduate school admissions)
