how personal should the essay be?

<p>As the title says- how personal should/can you make your essay? Are there certain things that you absolutely should not mention? For example, if you have had troubles in your family (divorce, siblings with mental illnesses, etc), which has affected you a lot, should/can you write about that? Or will it simply make the people making the decisions feel uncomfortable?</p>
