How poor do my semester grades have to be in order to be rescinded?

Hi,

I was accepted into Boston University and I am currently in the International Baccalaureate program. I'm graduating in a few days and I've held good grades, meaning As and Bs, throughout high school. But this last year I've had a lot of personal issues outside of school and my grades have dropped significantly this last semester. I just wanted to know, will having a D or a few Cs on my transcript make the University rescind my application?

I would take advice from previous posts I've read to call the university, but I've heard that this can be a bad decision to make because it reflects poorly on your character and could make matters worse. I'm not sure what Boston University's standards are. My GPA is weighted so for the most part it's been around 4-4.5, I'm not sure what will happen if I get a D or a C for my semester grades, or what that will bring me to GPA-wise.

Thank you very much

You should probably have your counselor write what these personal problems are and how they’ve been affecting your work. Although those grades might be grounds for rescinding admission under normal circumstances, you probably don’t need to worry if you have legitimate personal issues. Somehow, you should let the university know what’s happening before they get that final transcript.

Should I let the university know first, or would it be appropriate to wait for them to contact me and then offer an explanation? I’m really very concerned, because there is no possible way I can change my grades at this point, especially since teachers have already sent in the final grades. I’ve been trying to reach my teachers for a while to ask if I could improve them, but this month was IB testing so all of my teachers have not been at school since they are invigilating. My guidance counselors have also been absent as well.

I’m extremely worried about it. Part of my issues this year were panic attacks due to too much stress from work from school, having a job, trying to maintain connection with my family with which I had terrible fights the entire year, and then because I was so stressed out I suffered a lot from insomnia and because of that I caught so many colds, and ended up being absent from school, which did nothing to help my stress levels. It was really a terrible cycle. Now I’m very distressed about my application being rescinded because my final semester grades are very poor. I have only one D but I have many Cs and one A. I don’t know what to do since I can’t get a hold of anyone at school.

i am currently going through this well. there is a possibility i will finish off with a D in honors calc. in my opinion, i would wait until you know what grades you are getting for sure and then mail the school so they are not surprised.

i am not sure about this, but if you took AP’s in may and remained active in school, that could be “proof” that you are not slacking off. classes may have gotten harder, personal problems (should be explained in the letter) -

i would venture to say that you would need a SIGNIFICANT drop in grades. think about it, in an incoming class, do you think you are the only kid having this worry or struggling in certain classes? i doubt it. as long as your GPA is above a 2.7 Unweighted, i honestly would not worry at all. if you are pulling more than one D though, i would mail the school. good luck, everything will be ok.
