How possible of a candidate am I for Wharton?

@hardworking

Yeah, I mean, math I really did not even study for it, just went to my teacher and browsed through the book since last time I took Algebra II and Geometry was back in 8th and 9th grade. Now does course selection play a key role? I took nothing by Honors, and AP’s. I also have to take SAT Math II and Physics and AP Stats test. Next year I have AP Macro so I have that test as well.

Well, my dad makes money but he doesnt spend it at all. We currently live in a $100K home he bought in 2002, its now worth 120K, and drove a 2002 car for the past 9 years just because he couldn’t get over selling yet. Yet the FAFSA is going to give us a shaft and he will have to foot the entire tuition probably since he has a lot of liquid assets like stocks and cash in the bank…

@mokarney: Don’t worry too much about financial aid right now. The FAFSA is just one of three-four documents they use in determine how much aid you get. Focus on the application; the financial aid will take care of itself later!

@hardworking21

yeah, aid is the least of my worries. I looked at the form once and did a dry run though it but thats it. Iam mainly concerned about my GPA at the moment and my ACT scores from Feb should be posted in 2 weeks, but I know I did not get more than 34 since I mistimed myself and I guessed on the last 5 math questions and did not even have time for the sciene question since I was double checking myself. Not sure how I got into that predicament since in 7th grade, I was able to run though with 3-5 minutes to spare… guess I need to stop doubting myself on the test.

just found out that a senior in my class got accepted ED w/ a 3.5 GPA, 34 ACT, and he plays Lacrosse…

Just got my February ACT Scores… not that good, I got the same composite but my English and Reading went up, but my math and science went down from leaving questions blank from running out of time…

“Just got my February ACT Scores… not that good, I got the same composite but my English and Reading went up, but my math and science went down from leaving questions blank from running out of time…”

@mokarney, I didn’t even think that the ACT was a requirement for Wharton? With your SAT scores, I think you should probably avoid sending your ACT scores.

@danrash: Penn’s testing policy requires you to submit ALL scores. As in, if you take the ACT and SAT, you have to send both of those scores.

@danrash

I wasn’t worried until I saw hardworking21’s reply…

@hardworking21

dang it! quick question, does that mean ALL ACT attempts? Because I took the ACT in 7th grade and got a low 20… I just thought that it meant if you take the SAT, all Sat and if you take the act, all act… hmm… in that case might as well take the ACT again…

Don’t take the ACT again, that would be a waste if you already have a high SAT score. Test scores aren’t everything. My ACT was much lower than my SAT when I applied.

@mokarney I wouldn’t even bother sending the ACT score if it’s in 7th grade. I only sent them my ACT score even though I took the SAT as well. But that was partially due to me waiting on my subject test scores (which I didn’t need anyway)

Thank you, Dr. Google! The bolded line in the quote basically says it all. However, mokarney, they only want 9th grade and onward (in your HS career).

@hardworking21, @dfree124, @rhandco, and @ everybody else

Just wanted to thank you all for your suggestions and input. I think I have an OK chance at Wharton right now with my current scores, with a better ACT it should be much more helpful. Iam moving onto my essays and getting things ready for my application, so again, thank you all.

Mokarney,

I believe little to none of what you posted.

I don’t believe that you are actually applying to these schools, or else you would know that some of them don’t even have undergrad business programs.

I don’t believe that you donated $10,000–$12,000 to charities from your stocks, nor do I believe that you made that much money on stocks, because it would take a large initial investment, which I don’t think you can afford.

I don’t believe that you have been the president of your stock club for 4 years, because, quite frankly, it just sounds unrealistic.

And I don’t believe that you recruit 5th graders, who are 10 year olds, to participate in a stock club. That’s just stupid.

And no, Indian is not an under-represented minority.

@letsgoo

Take it as you will, I gain nothing by lying on this forum, Iam just curious of my chances.

I donated $10,800 to date so far to various charities like Red Cross, UNICEF, KIDS, Livestrong and local shelters.

My initial investment was $50,000 which was part me and part matched by my dad. Ive gone long on Silver and had a 10% return from it. I’ve also picked up AAPL at $200 and got rid of it at $250. There are tons of others I made great returns but there are also where I’ve also made dumb mistakes like investing in Circuit City prior to it going filing for bankruptcy.

My initial $50 is now $60 after taxes and donations.

It sounds unrealistic to by president of a stock club for 4 years? I don’t know where you are from but usually players on a football team play all 4 years and usually the QB will always be the same, the same situation applies here. I lead the team to a 20%+ return. That will get you the president seat back each year. I see you posted your chances thread and you were CLASS President for 3 years. I know for a fact that becoming a class president is much more difficult than becoming a stock club president… I had 2-3 other students compete against me each year. How many opponents did you have?

Ever go to an activity/club fair in Elementary School/Middle School? The leading members of all the clubs go to the fair to answer questions about middle school in general and to inform the kids about middle school. Middle School/High school get out a week before and I spent the first few days of my summer and it counted towards my community service.

Yeah, I figured out that Indian is a not under-represent minority. Thanks for the input.

I could care less if you believe me or not. The facts speak for themselves.

Mokarney,
As an avid investor myself I would advice you not to get too cocky just yet. Keep in mind the market is ups 100% over the last 2 years, so before proclaiming that you are a stock picking genius analyze your returns against the general market. Just some advice get out of SLV… as the market corrects people will pile back out of silver and into dollars and other risk free assets. At least you should take some hedge in a currency trade like going short the EUR/USD.

@ivygolf

I don’t use SLV, I use AGQ, its 300% price of silver. I did in fact dumb silver and commodities all together. I actually picked it up at around $70 in Feb of '11 and dumped it in dumped half of it for $130, and the other half at $100 after the silver crash. I recently put in 7K and picked up some at $47, we will see how it goes, I have a sell limit at 60 so lets see if it can hit it! I don’t consider myself any sort of investing genius. I have no idea as to why the DOW is over 13k and Nasdaq well past 3K. I was just reading an article from the WSJ about the difference in GDP vs. Job creation and how there might be a job crash here pretty soon. Iam planning on pulling out here within a couple weeks and sit some time out of the market.

Haha I was reading that article too… If you put a gun to my head I would say the rally continues until we hit 1450-1500. It is just like last year. I am accumulating VXX and VIX calls right now as it is a great opportunity as I doubt the VIX will stay at these levels.

@ivygolfer

I don’t deal with futures. I’ve had bad experiences but that was a while back. I mainly stick with big name stocks. Iam a bit excited since I picked up some shares of apple back at $525 and change, like 50 shares and a couple at $540. Dividends maybe? they are announcing something related to their cash, so we shall see…

You seem a bit skittish mokarney, what was the rational behind dropping AAPL at $250 and then picking it up again? I picked up a bunch at ~$273 and am still holding it.
