Is its academics comparable to ivies?
Is it a very well known university like Cornell or Columbia?

Those are three different questions. Are the academics comparable to the Ivys? Generally, yes. The faculty certainly is comparable. Most of the facilities are comparable. The student body is not quite comparable. Brandeis students are very good–but average grades and scores are going to be less than any Ivy.

Is Brandeis as well known as Columbia or Cornell. No, but it is well known and respected throughout the country. It is not very well known internationally, except in the Middle East.

How prestigious is Brandeis? Prestige is very subjective. In my view, most people would say that Brandeis is less prestigous than the Ivys or many of CC’s “top universities.” But I think it is as prestigous as the universities just below that level, including Tufts, Boston College, etc. It is certainly in the top 10% of national research universities.

My D is considering Brandeis along with several other comparable schools, and a professional co-worker said there was no question but that she should go there. When I asked “Why,” he said that it would forever make a statement about her smarts whereas the other schools did not necessarily reflect that. I think that is correct. Perhaps I run in a skewed crowd, but while I have known some pretty average people from even the ivies, I have never known an alum from Brandeis who was not bright. Just my opinion.

And about name recognition, I have known lots of very solid professionals outside of the NE who are entirely unfamiliar with the likes of Williams, Bates, Bowdoin, Wesleyan, etc.

Hello! Everyone! An international student here. I have been admitted by Brandeis. I may come to Brandeis. Is it a well-known school? Does every American know Brandeis?

I don’t think Brandeis is that well-known at all cliffordwu, at least not among general population

Strong Jewish community…if you can break through then they can be very helpful later on

Most americans don’t know Brandeis. However, most Americans don’t know the difference between UPenn and Penn State, so it’s not a big deal.

In social justice/law and medicine Brandeis is pretty well known, along with IR and Jewish Studies.

Trust me the decision makers in America know the difference between Penn State and UPenn.

Most Americans are familiar with educational institutions that have strong sports teams ;)

In other parts of the world the Ivies are well-known, but usually the excellent small colleges are not.

But in graduate school admissions, yes, they will know Brandeis.
