I was just wondering, growing up in New Jersey, I know a lot of my top 10% class in high school chose to go to Rutgers, as well at the other 80%. Its a very popular choice because its in NJ and affordable. I never saw it as a REALLY prestigious university, just something a little bit better than Montclair State University.

My question is for all the out of staters. What is your opinion on Rutgers (New Brunswick) and why? What do you friends think? Your parents? etc.

I'm just curious because I feel biased as a New Jerseyan. :P

I know I'm from New Jersey and shouldn't be answering this, but I just have to add my two cents.

Rutgers had the reputation at my high school that it was the place you went if you were a slacker or didn't really care about school. And I used to think that too. But after coming here and even looking at the rankings a bit more closely, I've realized that's only partially true. Are there a lot of kids who don't care about school? Yes. But are there a lot of really, really smart people? Yes. My roommate's boyfriend is a senior and he's already gotten into Princeton and Berkely for graduate school. I'm in the art history department and I know they have fairly close ties with Princeton, which is only a 20 minute train ride away.

I think there are good and bad things about Rutgers in terms of the quality of education, definitely. And I'm pretty sure that people who live in Jersey think much less of it than people from out of state. If you want some out of state opinions though, I'd just try searching for "rutgers reputation" or something along those lines. I know there was a discussion about it in here not too long ago.

as a NJ hs student, i think we hold it in fairly high regard.

its higher than say MSU or kean or drew, but lower than other out of state schools (udel, penn, etc)

Do you know what happens to the slackers that get admitted to Rutgers? They don't last for long =)

I'm speaking from an in-state perceptive, but Rutgers was looked down upon by kids who were in the top 5% or so of the class back at my high school here in Jersey. It was seen as the "last resort". But who could blame them. These are the type of kids who worked hard throughout high school pulling A's and getting involved in many extra-curricular activities and pulling 2000+ on the SATs. They did not want to feel like they "wasted" their time working hard to get into a school they could have gotten into by simply maintaining a 3.7 and a decent SAT score.

I am a former slacker at rutgers, and i'm not on probation yet =P! But it doesn't have a good reputation from where I come from, and it definitely deserves a better one if only for its difficulty in pulling A's.

Okay -Lurker- you are one of the exceptions, haha. Since you claimed "former" that means you got your act together and redeemed yourself before screwing up too badly.
