I am definitely able to afford Carolina since I'm applying in-state. My question is: how strong is UNC's physics and astronomy department?

Considering I have a 26 ACT, 4.8 W/3.8 UW GPA, and adequate ECs, which other astrophysics colleges should I be looking at? I am an international student on the verge of becoming a permanent resident.

Thanks.

Chapel Hill Is Ranked 28th In The Us News World Report....which Means It Is Pretty Good....i Am Not Sure About The Physics And Astronomy Dept...but I Do Know Chapel Hill Is Known For Producing Future Doctors And Lawyers...get What You Want From This...but Chapel Hill Is A Good School!

You should take the act again, or maybe try the sats, do some prep work before hand in either case, your gpa is great but your act is a bit low I think(I'm more familiar with the sat though)

I wouldn't be too worried about prestige in your case.

XD CC considers it a "top school" according to that forum. It's the 2nd best school in NC after Duke :). (Don't hurt me)

great school, not sure about your major though

maybe 28th in USNWR but 1st for basketball haha -- seriously its a really great school i'm sure the program will be awesome no matter what you decide to study there

Don't worry, UNC Chapel Hill is considered prestigious by the very high standards of CollegeConfidential posters. And believe me, these posters have set a very high barometer for what is considered elite and prestigious.

But seriously, UNC Chapel Hill is a great school and I've heard great things about it. Go for UNC if you get the chance.
