Trains can be expensive, but pre-planning and an under-26 rail card helps a lot- 1/3 off!
Durham was one I was looking at. You can apply for 5 colleges with ucas right? Are there extra fees to apply to separate colleges for internationals? And for Durham do you know how it is for internationals?
One price to apply to 5.
We visited Durham and it was probably my favorite campus.
It is always ranked in the top 10 for chemistry as are the others I mentioned.
They have various 3 and 4 year programs that include industrial or researcb experience. Spend some time on their web page.
Durham looks really good. But obviously I’m worried about pricing. How much do you actually spend on a year with every expense to go overseas?
Just in general for any college like Durham.
Again, the UK uni websites are really helpful.
It varies, but can often be done for $35K pinching / $40k more comfortably. Durham is expensive for internationals - £23K/`~$30K/pa for tuition alone. Add another £7-8k for catered accommodation puts you at ~$40k before living expenses & travel
Accommodation costs are more variable in the UK than in many US universities. ‘Catered’ (a set number of meals included) vs ‘self-catering’ (you are on your own for getting & preparing food) and distance from the main cluster of buildings are two big variables. One good thing is that the majority of English students live on quite tight budgets (though a lot of Durham students are rather well heeled, there will be plenty who are not). University fees for domestic students are flat- nobody can charge more than £9k, and there are bursaries/grants/loans for students who can’t afford that. As most of the unis you have heard of charge the £9k, there is much less of a cost barrier, so there will be students any place you go who are choosing the pub to go to based on it being ‘pound a pint night’.
“I’d be going to college on loans here. My family has been looking at colleges with a 30,000-35,000 tuition. Is it feasible to go overseas?”
$35k total price, or $35k for tuition only? If tuition only, then you should also consider other expenses and don’t forget travel.
How much of the $35k would be loans? I would be very reluctant to take out more than the 5.5k/6.5k/7.5k/7.5k federal loans, and even that much is a lot.
I don’t know what you will find for $35k in the UK. You can go to university in Canada for less than US$30k per year.
Well there’s the wall. I don’t know how I would fund it.
“I don’t know how I would fund it.”
What can you afford? How much can parents pay? That is probably the place to start.
Okay. This has been a highly theoretical conversation since I’m still two years away. My dad is kinda shy on details because of this. I know he has somewhere near 40k saved up on his own. And my grandparents are saving up and I think it might be another 20k. That’s why I came into this doubting I could afford because I don’t have much.
