How religious is LSU (and Southern colleges in general)?

I'm not religious. At all. Religion bugs me, extremely religious people bug me, and in general it's just not my favorite thing. I'm considering going to LSU because the OOS tuition is very cheap and I can get a great scholarship because of my grades (3.8 GPA, 1410 sat w/o writing). However, I'm worried about the religion issue. While this may be stereotypical and 100% wrong, I feel like a lot of the south is extremely religious. It might not be as big of a deal as I'm making it, but I also don't know how comfortable I'd be.

For those of you who aren't religious attending college in the deep south: what's it like? do you constantly run into people who are extremely religious, or is there a mix of people who don't go to church?

Define “extremely religious”. I can’t speak for colleges in the South, but I grew up in the South. People are going to say that they believe in Christianity, and go to church, and possibly talk about their faith. However, it’s not like the God Squad is looking to jump you and evangelize until you accept Christ.

Most people I know, once they know you’re not religious and not interested in conversion to any religion, will respect that. Some people will be rude about it, but they will be in a small minority.

You’re still young and you should go to church. Jesus loves you!

Sarcasm or not, it’s those people I’m not a fan of. I was in Indiana over the summer, and all you saw everywhere were “abortion is bad” billboards and “Jesus loves you” signs in their front yards. IU quickly got crossed off my list :p

^You’re going to run into things like that in almost any place you go. I don’t think it should be that big of a factor in what school you attend.

Large universities like LSU are going to be accepting of many people. Being in the South people may ask you what church you attend or something of that nature but will be fine if they know you don’t want to talk about it. I don’t think college kids are going to have that as their primary issue though. I’m sure you will find a like minded group there to hang with.
