Hi, I am an international student and have recently been admitted to AU & Miami-oxford .

I would like to know how is the economics major in AU? comparing to MIAMI-OXFORD, i need to pay USD 10000 more at AU each year, is it worth to go?
Which one of these 2 schools have better reputation ?

I'm a 1995 AU graduate with a double major in political science and economics. I also applied to (and was accepted at) Miami U.

Given AU's location in Washington, DC, and all of the resources and opportunities that come with that location, it's a great place to study economics. I found the course work to be challenging and I think it provided a broad selection of courses.

I chose AU for several reasons: location in Washington, DC; relatively small undergraduate population (about 5,000); small class sizes; and scholarship.

I can't answer whether AU is worth $10,000 more per year--that's a pretty subjective topic. But it's a fair question to ask, and I'm not surprised that it's asked by someone with an interest in economics!

Yeah I think with the exception of a few good professors, the economics department has some problems. First, as Swmass stated, there is very little emphasis on quantitative economics which puts us at a significant disadvantage to other universities. Second, many of the professors have very unconventional ideological views from many of the standard views in economics today. I am not going to throw any names out there, but there are a few professors who will literally take a few classes off each semester to go attend Socialist Party of America events. This is not always a bad thing, but if you are into learning a more traditional(and practical) form of economics you may be put at a disadvantage.

Recognize that many of the programs outside of SIS, SPA, and to some extent Kogod are severely neglected due to a lack of demand. The advantage to this, of course, is more direct contact with professors; the disadvantage to this is a lack of resources and a lack of career guidance.
