The student that wrote the recent article in the Daily Orange mentions campus "muggings and student deaths"? Also, she seems to have many negative issues, including an unfriendly student atmosphere and severe weather issues. Is this writer on target or scaring us?

I have just accepted admission to Su and all of the things that the author writes about are reasons I was on the fence. She makes it sound like a miserable dangerous experience. If it is, I will transfer after a year. I dont know any other students who attend, but looking at other things that were written, it seemed like most students thought it was a good education and down played the negative…maybe this is not the case. Maybe they are all just muddling through in a cold haze of terrified misery. I guess I will see. But obviously, this is not a piece that makes a person feel warm and fuzzy about the choice of Syracuse. It is more like you are preparing to go to war than college.

Re; the weather: if this is the first you are hearing about cold, snowy winters in Syracuse, you have been living under a rock. You will learn what “lake efect” means.

Only strong will return in the fall? What have the author been smoking? The girl in the DO article needs to get over herself. If she enjoyed her time nonetheless theirs no need to write such a pointless article. Just another excuse to talk like some other people. I’m glad the people who commented set it straight.

Don’t confuse rhetoric with real world. The deaths that are being referred to are several incidents that occurred regarding some very, very, tragic accidents to several students that occurred while away from campus and if I remember right a pre-existing medical condition on campus.

There was a high visibility incident regarding a couple of guys from the surrounding area crashing a frat party which triggered a student versus townie fight very early in the year. The aggressor kids from town were apprehended immediately, though if my memory serves one student was hurt badly enough to get some hospital time. The whole incident seemed to have been handled well.

My daughter is finishing up her freshman year. I am a crazy parent regarding safety and was very deliberate in looking at safety on campus. The campus is well run, very few issues. The neighborhood and downtown are OK, but the students have to learn to be “street smart” if they are venturing out and about because there is no denying that Syrcuse is a rust-belt city suffering through problems, particularly these last few years.

My daughter is very comfortable there and has gotten to know the city very well. I think her first year has been great and we are very high on the school. The kids have fun, they work hard, my daughter seems to have learned a lot, the BBall season was a blast (I flew up to be at the Villanova game, it was great!).

Extra thoughts…this was the mildest winter for Syracuse since somewhere around WWII. If the girl that wrote the article is complaining about the winter than she should transfer this summer before she sees what a real upstate NY winter can look like!!! She might turn in to Jack Nickolson’s character in the shining!

We are from out of state…the airport has been great in that it is small enough for my daughter to manage it well but still with a lot of flight choices. Again, very positive experience with the school.

Ignore the article.
Like most schools now a days, you can call campus police and they will escort you back to where you want to go. Of course if you walk alone late night, there is chance that something bad can happen to you. Thats why they tell you to move around in groups and not by yourself late at night. BTW Syracuse has an open campus, so what do you expect.
