How safe is it to walk around on campus at 3 AM or 4 AM alone? There have been times when I had to do this or avoid going to eat, or etc...should I not have chickened out? Is it really safe? We're talking on campus, main campus areas, up and down...maybe a bit on the drag?

You probably would have been okay. I’ve been out at that hour PLENTY. The streets are DEAD. Not a soul insight. Except, maybe all the after hours crowd at Whataburger or Kerbey.

And you should be safe walking around campus. I used to take late night walks when I couldn’t sleep. Walk around turtle pond or something. It’s alright. UTPD has cruises around the campus at all hours anyway and you’ve got those towers just in case.

UT and the surrounding area is not exactly “dangerous” at any time of night or day. Just practice common sense, and you’ll be fine.

I’ve done it a couple of times. I walked from FAC to Jester at 3AM+ twice. It was pretty empty. I was kinda spooked lol
I’ve heard girls shouldn’t walk alone on the drag after 11…I’ve done it once though and obviously survived.

Campus is fine, nothing to worry about.
I’m a scrawny piece of **** and I walked from Jester to ABC Quad after 3 AM about 3/5 of the weekdays last semester.

Honestly, I’ve never felt unsafe on campus at any time of the day and I regularly walked at 2-3-4 AM from the Quad area to the PCL/Jester area. There really are students walking around campus at all times of the day. At least, I can’t imagine feeling unsafe on the part of campus west of San Jacinto. The eastern part of campus with Creekside, the music building, law school etc I guess would be less safe because there’s less light and fewer people, but there’s no reason to be walking around over there anyway because it’s just a bunch of academic buildings. And walking around on Red River, MLK or Dean Keeton at night probably isn’t the best idea.

I try to stay off the Drag after 11 o’clock or so, especially south of 21st where there’s not as much light and where there’s less foot traffic from West Campus, but even when I’ve been in the area later I haven’t had any problems… then again, I’m a tall guy with a fairly threatening appearance, so YMMV.

Also, if you are walking around at all hours of the night and see something or someone suspicious, don’t be afraid to give UTPD a call. They’ll attend to it pretty quickly.

Honestly Im a pretty big guy, and I wouldnt go strolling around at 3AM. UT does a good job about shooing the homeless away, but for someone from a smalltown, austin is not weird it is creepy.

Most creepy thing ever… Scientology building.

The only time I had any trouble was when a “nice guy” offered to walk me to my dorm from the Union (I’d started talking to him while I was playing video games). It was towards the end of finals, so there weren’t many people around. He put his arm around me as we got close to SRD. It was so weird, I didn’t know what to do! Then he tried to start kissing me. Thank goodness, some people came out of the dorm about that point, and he walked away. Really disconcerting experience.

@MaineLonghorn - Wow. I’d never let some stranger try to walk me off even if they seemed nice. Who the heck are they? Ain’t no friend or anything. I wouldn’t have even left the Union at that point. That’s terrible though, sorry.

@BowTieFratty - Austin isn’t creepy at all. I’ve had worse experience in smaller towns. I was in a small town up north and a guy once tried following me to my car from a restaurant late a night.

Just gotta have good street smarts – be aware of your surroundings, and be prepared.

Also, random fact. Yeah, that Scientology building is just strange. Why, the drag right? Anyway, before it was the Scientology building, it was a place called the Bagel Manufactory up until like 1988 or 1989. I wish it was still that instead of the bogus thing it is now. hah
