How safe is Northeastern?

I really want to buy some new equipment for my hobby but it's really expensive so my parents think it will get stolen. It's also quite big... is there any lockers that I rent which are safe? If I leave it in my room will it get stolen?

I’ve never heard of a dorm room ‘break-in’ - with one exception, and that may have been fixed. Stuff does get stolen occasionally, but the scenario is always something like, “I let this guy I didn’t know come to my room,” or, “I left my door propped open and left my room for a bit,” or, “My roommate let his really shady friend visit, and then something went missing.” The exception had to do with one or two of the older dorms not having the ceilings between rooms separated - basically, the wall ended at the bottom of the ceiling tiles, so if you could get into one room on a floor, you could get into them all. I believe this may have been fixed before I began attending though, and in any case, it was in only one or two of the freshman dorms where this was a problem - if you’re really concerned, just say where you’ll be living and see if anyone has lived there - I can almost guarantee they’ll know if its an issue or not.

But yeah, assuming you are in a dorm without that one issue, there really isn’t any reasonable way anyone could access your stuff without you or a roommate letting them in, so anything being stolen would either be your own fault, or your roommates, and if stuff starts vanishing and you haven’t been letting anyone suspicious in, the dots are not hard to connect.

What kind of equipment are your referring to specifically?

Thanks so much, it is actually photography equipment. I tried to ask around, but no one could give me an answer. Are there lockers around? Because I have so much equipment I have no idea where to store and I don’t want it just lying around my room.

I have seen lockers near the student center, but I don’t know about dorms.

There are some lockers, but I don’t know a whole lot about them, and they aren’t very large - if you don’t have room for your equipment in your room, a locker wouldn’t be big enough to make a difference.

Just don’t be stupid. Read the Northeastern crime log to get an idea of how thefts occur. Easily 90% of them involve people being idiots; leaving laptops/ipods in the library unattended or allowing strangers into their apartment. There’s also a small cadre of high school age kids from Roxbury who often hang around the campus and routinely try and do snatch and grabs on unsuspecting girls walking and talking on their iphones (this happens at least a few times a month). In summation, common sense goes a long way in keeping your stuff safe.
