How safe is Pittsburgh?

Is there a lot of crime around Oakland? I live in the Boston area and am aware that there is a lot of crime in a big city.

pierre,

This is my second semester at Pitt and, from my personal experience, Pitt's campus is very safe. The crime rate in Oakland may not be pristine, as is to be expected with any urban environment, but the campus security does a great job of ensuring student safety. There are your run-of-the-mill "safety boxes" all around campus in case of emergency, but I don't know of anyone who has even heard of these being used.
No matter the night of the week there are ALWAYS people around and I've never felt unsafe even at 2AM. My only advice would be to stick with at least one other person, especially in South Oakland, but that's just as a measure of common sense. Hope this helped.

City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County in general is quite safe. 1/20 of the Allegheny county population have LTCFs. Cause and effect? You decide.

Oakland, as well as most of Pittsburgh, is safe.

sorry-- what does LTCF mean ?

My son is at Carnegie Mellon, but lives in an apartment in the Oakland area just a couple of blocks from the main U. of Pittsburgh campus. I feel very safe when I am there.

LTCF = License to Carry Firearms. I had to look it up. I had no idea either. It was either that or Long Term Care Facility, which doesn't make sense.

thanks... ? :-)

Yea the former. License to Carry Firearms. Well a month or so ago the Pittsburgh Tribune or Daily or whatever paper wrote the story, caught my eye.

i felt safe when i visisted, i got in too, engineering, i think we established this?

I'd be more interested in the median income than the saturation of LTCF. Either way, you are statistically in difficult territory when you start dealing with issues like this, as there will be tons of problems with model specification, conflated variables, endogeneity, etc.

So I typed up this huge 4 paragraph response talking about stuff and CC timed out. Will do it tomorrow, sleepy. Basically I agreed with UCLAari, but also threw in some other hypothesis regarding criminal behavior vs income levels, the role of minorities in determining safety, crime rates, risks in comparing crime rates between different populations, esp. between states with more homogeneous populations, the role of violence and crime as it relates to culture, etc. This should make for a stimulating topic. Sorry for the hijack, but I think the OPs question is answered.

I wish Pitt would improve the lighting around campus. Some areas are positively dark at night, like near the Cathedral of Learning, for instance.

Security for those living in any of the Tower buildings is excellent, though. Guards check the i.d. of everyone who enters, and it's not possible for someone to sneak in behind you. Visitors have to be signed in AND out.
