I'm going to be living at Sterling Highlander on Iowa, and driving from there to school during the summer. Is the area around there safe?

Yelp the place and see/read the reviews.

Sterling, itself, is alright. I’ve never heard of too much crime in the complex. Things can get rowdy/noisy there, but other than that, you should be safe driving to and from school for the summer.

The neighboring area around it can get pretty sketchy though, especially if you find yourself walking on streets such as Iowa, Blaine, Linden.

Neighboring area being sketchy as in at night or all day?

Where should I get my food?

well, i was once harrassed by a man on chicago & university…

Things are mostly sketchy at night; usually you should be fairly safe walking during the day, but just be aware of your surroundings.

If you need food, you can go to Stater Bros. or Kmart right across the street from Sterling. Or if you like Ralphs, there’s one about 3 miles away. For fast food, there is Bakers, Subway, Starbucks, Jack in the Box, and Farmer Boys, which are all across the street. If you want to go to a restaurant, there’s a few in the University Village (right down the street) or you can go to the Riverside Plaza (quick freeway drive).

Riverside…Inland Empire is just ghetto. How it got that way is because it’s in the desert, property is cheap and affordable. I would say be cautious of your surroundings at night. Don’t go walking down the street with earphones on and looking down at your phone.

During the day is not that bad, but it makes you wonder why there are “adults”/non-students roaming around in broad daylight and not at work. Like I said, ghetto. You may get someone trying to get a handout from you here and there but no real harm.

I never realized this before, but I just found out from Campus Discovery that the “serious crimes” is rated 4.88. “Drug and Weapon incidents” is 2.17.

Lol it actually sounds like a scary place.

@JerzonIII Eh, I’d take that with a grain of salt. Where do those crime stats come from? A while ago UCR was placed on a “Most Dangerous Campuses” list alongside UCLA, but it turns out that the list was based on the number of incident reports filed by police departments. Since UCPD works with Riverside PD in the area surrounding campus, that figure is higher – and since these reports are part of RPD’s larger effort to address issues, file reports, and improve transparency, the list was casting a negative light on their efforts to do their jobs.

Aside from that tangent, the info on the website you provided seems outdated. It says UCR’s acceptance rate is over 80%, but our 2012 acceptance rate was actually closer to 62% ([Freshman admission profile | UC Admissions](http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/riverside/freshman-profile/index.html)).

3 out of your 4 posts are from that Campus Discovery website – be careful, you’re coming across as part of their marketing team! UCR’s info on College Board is pretty accurate, and for crime reports, this page is a good resource: [Police Department: Home](http://police.ucr.edu/).
