So I find myself very attracted to Tulane, definitely in my top 3, but my parents, influenced by coworkers and family members, feel that the city of New Orleans and even Tulane's campus is unsafe. I'm not sure as to how true this is, so I'd like to know, perhaps from current/former students. Personally, I couldn't care less, just to convince my parents to let me consider it.

Here are some past threads which I think you will find very complete. Things haven’t changed too much except if anything Tulane has added more safety features such as more cameras.

Some repitition in there as you might imagine, but I would start with the last one (the oldest) and work your way up. Certainly if you have any other questions come on back!

Have you seen the campus yet? If no, try and get there with your parents. Best way to cement the deal. Also, don’t tell them you couldn’t care less. Actually you should care. It is just that in this case, Tulane is no worse and actually better than numerous other schools I bet they wouldn’t worry about.

My daughter and her friends use Tulane SafeRide frequently. They provide free car service to many locations off campus and will walk you to your dorm from anywhere on campus up until 3 am or thereabouts. Most city universities offer services like this - it’s up to you to use them!

Visiting with parents is the best antidote for these types of parental fears. FWIW my D just graduated. She lived on campus and off campus … never had a problem, nor did any of her friends. Tulane is located in a very nice area of the city. Good luck!

NewHope - where did she live when she was off campus? Maybe you can add some insight to the thread just started about housing. I couldn’t answer most of her questions except for a general description of the area and houses available near Tulane.

She was on Pine street, which is on the other side of Broadway. (The houses in Audubon Place were out of our price range!) Some CC posters report that the Broadway side of campus attracts more property crime than the State Street side, but neither my D nor her roommate, nor any of her friends living on that side of campus had any issues.

LOL, yeah, I did not mean Audubon Place! How cool would that be? For a student, unthinkable. There is supposed to be some level of poverty associated with being a student, lol. That would be like a movie where a Saudi prince enrolls at the school and has to live in one of the mansions. Too funny.

The most dangerous aspect of New Orleans is the weather.
:)

-Louisiana native.

Haha, junipermellow, true perhaps, but this fall Long Island was hit with the remnants of 2 hurricanes that actually did some damage and yet NOLA didn’t have any issues this year. Then on Dec. 20, LI had the biggest snowstorm ever for December. So weather can be an issue everywhere. Back to the safety issue, my S (a freshman) told me of an armed robbery on Maple Street during his first semester – the victims being 2 Tulane students. Apparently this street is very dark and the students are constantly warned not to walk there at night. No one was hurt (just robbed) but it did shake me up a bit just knowing it happened. FYI, he will be going back 2nd semester.

I read about those robberies, and they have undercover cops and others working on it last I heard. Just to be clear to the OP, Maple Street area is not on campus, it is some blocks away. But it is part of the university area where students hang out, for sure. It is disturbing of course, but obviously this kind of thing happens at almost every university. The fact that it got as much publicity as it did in the local paper tells me it isn’t too common. But of course you can read that for yourself in the police stats in the links I gave.

You are right Martini, Maple and some of those other streets around there could use a lot more lighting. But Tulane cannot control that, although I think NOLA would have to listen if Tulane insisted.
