How scores are viewed

OK. So my two best ACT scores are exactly the same: 32.25.

ACT (Dec last year)
E 35
M 29
R 32
S 33

E/W 36 (12 essay)

ACT (Oct this year)
E 36
M 30
R 32
S 31

E/W 36 (12 essay)

I know a 32 is good but im afraid it might not make the cut at, say, columbia or penn. If my English scores are perfect (or near perfect) and I have an amazing rec from my English teacher, will it make up for the not so stellar math scores? I know im being obsessive. Dammit. I would have gotten a 31 on Math in Oct if I wasnt stupid about one problem. Oh well, I still have a chance to redeem myself with the Math SAT IIs.

PS Sorry to all who get annoyed that this is a rant. I know it is, I just had to do it.

Do you think studying for the Math IIC will be enough prep for the ACT Math?

yes. i got my highest math score (31) by studying for math IIC (which I totally failed and then cancelled). still, u have to be naturally good at math too if u want to get thirties that are up there (33+)

lol naturally?

yea. im not a math whiz but i studied hard enough and pulled off a 31. u have to pretty much be really good at math to pull of a 33 or higher. at least i think so.

Well, the fact that your English grades and recommendation are strong only confirms what your ACT shows adcoms - that you're better at English than at math/science. If you had said you had strong recs and school grades at math, that might help to counterbalance slightly weaker math/sci scores on your ACT. A lot of students are a little uneven - better at the languages than at sciences, or vice versa, so I wouldn't worry too much. A 32 probably passes muster for Penn and Columbia. How unlucky of you to be one question away from a 33 both testings :( btw, your 1st and 2nd scores almost didn't change at all, so at least you're pretty consistent :)

well i do have good math and science grades. in terms of recs, im sure my ap bio teacher likes me and thinks im a good student (i have a high 90's average) but he's only known me for this year. as for my physics treacher last year, he's not the type to write recommendations. and in terms of math, i havent had the same math teacher since i started high school so there is no person who knows me consistently. my math teacher from last year likes me and i got good grades but i dont know if he would recommend me as "one of best in my career" whereas the recommenders i have chosen would. anyhoo, i think if i can pull off a 720+ on my sat ii math in two weeks i'm good.

Just to tell you a 720 Math II won't impress; its barely in the same league as a 30 ACT math. Since more people make perfect on Math II (%) than ACT Math or SAT Math, nothing other than 790-800 impresses the schools you are aiming for.
(I know 800 is 88th percentile, 790 is like 70 something)

Anyways; your math score is fine; its not going to hurt your chances imo, last time I checked colleges looked at your composite ACT for the most part.

do u think if i was able to pull a 31 math act i could pull a 780+ on math ii?

I got a 31 on ACT math, but my math 2 score will probably be under 700. ha. it is much much much harder to get 780+ on math 2 than it is to get 30ish on the ACT.

ok. so ill be realistic: 740+?? what about 740+ on math 1?

750+ on math 1, if you can deal with SAT tricks. probably around 700 on math 2.
