How screwed am I for transferring... + Musical Talent

Highschool GPA: 1.9
Rank: 400/560
SAT: 1500/2400
Classes: A couple AP's and honors classes
Extra: Varsity Basketball (9-12), KeyClub, Model UN,

College: IUP (Indiana University of Pennslyvania) - State school
Major: Pre-Med/Biology
GPA: 2.5 (First semester)
GPA Overall: I'm doing okay in my classes, I'm sure I'll get a 3.7 (second semester)

I didn't do well in Highschool, slacked off. I did well in the beginning of first semester but due to some personal issues, I slacked off and missed a couple final exams. I'm working hard on trying to transfer out of my school. It is too far away from home, and I don't really like it there. I've applied to the following schools:

*Temple University

*Drexel University

Pennstate University (Main)

*University of Pittsburgh

Rutgers University

University of Maryland

What do you think are my chances?

I am also a very good singer. I made it to Hollywood week for American Idol, and if school isn't right for me. I am thinking about becoming a singer. However, I would like to pursue education. Do you think that if I make a demo tape and send it to the Admissions office, I would have a better chance getting in to the schools I want to transfer to? (Listed Above).. I would really like to go to Temple or University of Pittsburgh.

Which branch of rutgers would you be applying to? It will probably be difficult to get into a lot of these schools because after just one semester’s grades worth from college they will base a lot of your application on high school.

IMO, for Drexel and Temple I think you have a decent shot. Rutgers…it depends which campus and school you’re applying for. And what bhms mentioned about the schools basing their decision mostly on high school is true. If I were you, I’d do one or two more semesters at your current school and go from there.

why did you receive such a poor gpa? if you explain it in your essay you might have a shot.

i would also take one or two more semesters if i were you…

i have a 3.7, but i won some young jazz singers award and sung in carnegie hall, so i think it gives me an ‘edge’. i was wondering about sending a demo…

for pre-med, you need to work harder. or, perhaps, rethink it.

i want to go to medical school, but most schools are now looking for NON-bio majors, which is why i am applying to UCLA as an anthropology major with a psychocultural and medical subconcentration. the admit rate is wayyyyyy better for that major, so i think i’m being prudent.

maybe you should consider that? most UCs won’t take that GPA. you need to go to community college. that’s what i did.

If you are set on transferring maybe you should apply to some safety schools as well. With only one semester where you excelled it might be hard to bank on the schools you listed. What about going to school for music/vocal performance? Have you considered that? It might be a good way to combine education with your singing dream.

At least there is a better trend after you graduated high school.
