How secure is Accouting?

^ The bachelor’s degree requirement for all the majors including acct in her business school is only 175 quarter units. But majority of their acct majors go to public accounting fields after graduation, so they have the 225 units in mind. The school encourage the students to take more units each quarter while not jeopardize the grade.

Generally, doctors are more job-secured than accountants because they are more needed in a society. One can argue that business cannot run without accountants but when life is on the line, you would want to pick the doctor’s path.

In addition to that, your father is a doctor so he will probably be a great help towards study. Your father is telling you to become a doctor because he knows the inside and outside of what it takes to become a doctor. He knows that he can direct you to the right path and plus I’m pretty sure your father has a lot of connections and connections are always a plus. Also, you don’t have to worry about any debt since your father will probably be able to cover it all.

If you have equal interest in both, then you will have to take other factors into consideration. What is your ideal work environment? Why do you like doctor and accountant? Is there anything else that one has that can outweigh the other? What type of people do you like to associate with?

Doctors and accountants are very different from one another because they deal with different deals. You can always switch fields. My macro-economics professor got a BS in finance I believe and then he switched to dentistry because he wanted to try something different. Now, he’s a professor in my school with a Ph.D in Finance. Basically, he switched twice. As long as you make enough money, you can always do whatever you want later on with your life. I’m pretty your father will be disappointed in you for doing something like that but at least you tried both right?

So bottomline is that pick out all the pro’s and con’s of both careers and try to outweigh one another using those.

Accounting is as secure as any other professional career. No career is recession proof. Don’t do Accounting because you think there is job security or stable money. Do it because you are interested in and enjoy some of the accounting work.

For the vast majority of people, avoiding a field dominated by thick rimmed glasses and pocket protectors is more important than a slight increase in job security.

^ are the thick glasses and pocket protectors supposed to be for doctors or accountants?..
