byronster, I go to Case and I like it. I have a social life, (though I don't drink and frankly I'm glad there isn't a big party scene), I'm not totally focused on GPA and I have friends. If it's not for you, then you should go somewhere else but you are presenting a one sided story to people who are considering going there. They will need to find out for themselves.

ok for psatmadness and possibly others:
why did you choose case over other, perhaps more selective and better known places? and do you regret that choice?
because i was accept to hopkins as well, but havent ruled out case because of the scholarship offer. obviously it's a very difficult choice...but yea, i just wanted some opinion as to how to decide, thanx

I partially made the choice based on the scholarship (trustees) but also because when i went to campus I liked it...it "felt" good. I'm also not into partying and it is clear that Case isn't a big party school. I also based it on what i didn't like about other schools. For example, I was accepted at Johns Hopkins too but I hated the city. Also during the visit at one of the sessions, Hopkins seemed to put a lot of focus on how they're "not just" about education..that there is a big social scene. The way they did that turned me off. I was accepted at WashU and Carnegie and Duke among others but they were all so expensive...it didn't make sense for an undergrad education. I'm glad I made this choice. I'm very happy here.

DS has been accepted, also with merit scholarship. He plans to attend the accepted student day in Feb to see how it feels there.

I once heard a saying that Case was pretty easy to get into but hard to stay in. That's pretty true. It certainly is more work to stay in than to get in. That said, don't get scared and think it's impossible. It's not. If you're coming here for the academics, just remember that. Anyways, I've found a group of guys I love hanging with. We don't party and drink or anything like that, but we do other sweet things. A good number of them (myself excluded) are musicians and just spend time jamming. We watch movies every weekend or every other weekend. A few of us are going to concerts in the city (Siggur Ros this weekend!). We even do crazy albeit geeky things that shall not be mentioned here.

Now that said, I'm sitting here procrasting while I have a Lab Report due by 6:00 tomorrow that I have not trully started writing as well as an essay and 2 tests left in the rest of the week.

Not very.

Check out the kids who have applied from my school graduating from 2003-2005

Doesn't look that hard to me

cheapseats your rationale doesn't make sense. Look at how many people got accepted from your school to carnegie mellon. does that mean it's easier to get in there than to case?

you have got to be kidding me. I never said anything about numbers. I could have said 37/38 people at my school that applied got in. Also Carnegie denied a lot of people too. On top of that you can see that Carnegie was more selective in terms of stats than Case.

I can't say anything good or bad about carnegie past what I know and have heard. I am not applying but I do almost regret not applying. It was on a short list of schools for me to apply to. All i have ever heard that it was a great school but easy to get into. That is it. I heard it is good for the sciences but whenever i heard people talking about it they would always say it is pretty easy to get into. To be honest there are people at my school with lower grades saying that they feel lucky they have a chance at a good school. Case is right up there with NYU,BC and some great state schools.

i was put on the alternate list with a 30act, 3.6 gpa, and great essay/recs..im assuming they are at least a LITTLE selective...on the other hand, case is my 8th choice out of 8 schools and i have also heard, like a few people mentioned earlier, that the social life is horrendous.

PSATmadness we are all fully aware of the meaning of sober fun and chasing girls around the dorms and all of that. However, you have to realize that at least 90% of college students drink at least once a week. The only reason we bust our asses at school is for that beer on friday night. We define the BTO's great rock ballad "Takin' Care of Business". I will most likely be attending McGill university in Montreal. Now that is a place with a thriving social life and exceptional academia, and that is what I call a COMPLETE college.

cincysport35, my D looked at McGill very seriously (and is at Case now). From a USA perspective, it's not really a complete college experience (eg, they only have enough dorms for "first years".) But it is what I would call a big city living experience (which is unique versus any US school). In comparison, Case is like a LAC in terms of personal attention, small classes, chances for working with faculty (or should I say even getting to talk to faculty). If you haven't yet, I strongly recommend you visit McGill during the winter (such as February) and see how you like it.

flsky, as to your question about music, case has a partnership with the cleveland institute of music (their campuses are virtually one and the same, cim students live in dorms rented from case) and you can cross register. Also, there's a pretty decent wind ensemble at case, but it means you have to put up with Dr. Ciepluch (take it from someone who's been in his high school group for 5 years, this isn't always easy)

hehe, Dr. Ciepluch isn't that bad...He is demanding and makes sure the group sounds good before a concert...but he has yet to throw his baton at anyone or spit on the flutes when yelling or drip sweat on anyone...so all in all he's a great conductor! (My high school director did all of the above...I often felt like I needed a shower after band :-) )

he's not a bad conductor, his ego just gets on my nerves a bit sometimes. He tells people what they want to hear, which isn't always the best thing in the world, although a nice ego boost. But like I said, the music program at case is pretty great, partly as a result of all that Dr. C does.

i hear a lot of things about CASE, esp. the importance they give to extra currics when looking at apps. will good extra currics overshadow other things such as weak test scores etc

Hey music kids:

Do you know anything about participating in orchestra at Case? How hard is it to get into for a non-music major? Son plays cello.

Also, does anybody know if there are decent oppprtunities for stage crew (or theater tech)?

Thanks.

I play cello and I'm in the orchestra there. There is an audition and there were so many cellists that they apparently formed a second orchestra. I'm in the first. It's not that hard to get in except for numbers of people auditioning. A lot are music majors. I'm biomedical eng.

As far as I know, the orchestra is the same as band in that anyone and everyone can get into the group (or one of the two groups). Amazingly, given the range of talent in the group, both the band and orchestra sound really good and play some tough music.

Stage crew and technical theater...I was really involved in that in high school, but for whatever reason I didn't get involved with it in college, although I did get some info when I was a freshman...
One of the best things I have heard to do is take the stagecraft/lighting design/etc courses. They are well done and are a nice boost for the gpa when there is a rough course load :-) Because a lot of the set construction is done for the classes, there isn't as much to be done just as an extracurricular activity, but there are always plays being put on around campus, so I think there is always something to do. I seem to remember that the musical group needed help with technical theater stuff. It all boils down to getting on the right email lists when a student gets to campus :-)

Byronster,
Dude, i'm really sorry you feel that way but i could disagree more. I've been going to Case for almost four years and i love it here. No it's not a party school and yes our class are hard and we've got some unorthdox folk, but you can have fun if you want to.
Every weekend there parties to go to or concerts to attend. I've got loads of freinds who aren't socially akward and are awesome to hang out with. There about 5 different clubs that i'm active in adition to being in a fraternity. To be honeset i'm ussally doing so much that i have to pick and choose which events to go to.
I turned down the Universty of Michigan to go to Case, and 4 years later i'd do it again.
Bryonster maybe Case just isn't for you, and in that case i belive you know that Undergrade Studies is in Sears Hall and they'll give you all the documents you need to transfer out.

Oh and i know for a fact that 1000 on the SAT isn't good enough for Case. Our average SAT score is 1340 and its very difficult to get in if you have under 1200 and thats acoriding to our admssions councelors.

i had a 2200 on new sat, i got waitlisted
