How selective is CM? (Chances)

I don't know how prestigious/selective CM is, but a friend went there, and I checked it out online. It seems like a nice place.

so...

GPA
Soph: 3.4, 3.4
Junior: 3.3, 4.0

ACT:35
SAT:2310

EC
2 Varsity Sports
5 Leadership positions (president, VP or secretary)
3 National Level Awards (In a competition)
Played in Carniegie hall
Numerous medals/awards for violin
Internship

I'd like to know my chances at CM.

Thanks

Your test scores are high enough but your gpa is a bit low. If you are applying to HSS, I'm pretty sure you are in. If you are applying for CIT, it's a 50/50 shot (better grades in science/math and better SAT math scores would help you out).

If you are applying to Tepper it might be a bit of a reach as the school has recently gotten a surge in applicants. Their acceptance rate is the lowest (20%) which is even lower than SCS (though SCS has self selecting and more qualified applicants).

Good luck.

GPA is a 3.525. Your scores are high and your GPA is slightly below average. I'd say over 50% chance.

What major?

i'm not sure. Im interested in pre business

look at the CMU website ... it shows the score ranges and average GPAs for each school. Shows how many applied how many accepted.

Is there a stats of accepted students from few years ago--or for transfers?

Undergraduate First-Year Admission Statistics 2004-2005

anyone know if they keep stats for transfers?

I doubt if they keep stats from transfers, since SAT and hs gpa are less important at that point.

One "statistic" I read on usnews is last year 309 applied to CMU for transfer, 45 accepted (14.5%) and 30 went, so it appears it's harder to transfer in than get in right from hs.

Getting back to the original question, CMU got 20% more apps this year, 18,493 compared to 15,781 last year so it'll be more selective this year.

This is true and the Tepper school recognized a 50% increase in applications. I hope that you get in though, good luck!

for this year???

It was posted on 4/05. I can find the link for you if you desire.

Ugh.. I have to wait 40 seconds to post...30.....20...10..

thanks for your help

is CMU a more MIT type school or a uchicago type school?

It's a more Stanford-type school. Just like them, we are often known for our robotics and tech but just like them, our business (their econ) programs are highly prestigious and reputable.

PS: I guess we are comparable to NYU too. Our business schools (Stern and Tepper) are tied and our drama schools (Tisch and whatever we have) are comparable. Just add engineering and CS :)

I'd say MIT/Stanford/NYU mix :)

id add in caltech and take out stanford. why? even though caltech is similar to mit, i think cmu is more geeky than just an mit/stanford/nyu mix would have you think.

so i present you the real cmu: MIT/CalTech/NYU

If you come here, you'll find that surprinsingly CMU is not that geeky as far as rumors go. Stanford is a bit geeky too if you really get to know them. I mentioned Stanford because we always compete with them in robotics and we do have a lot of transfers and cross applicants.

Saying MIT and Caltech both is a bit redundant, but I respect your opinion :)

fine, if you prefer: CMU --> 2 Parts MIT / 1 Part NYU
