i'm a california resident, so basically all the college information i have received have been about UC's only. does anyone know the selectivity of NYU by any chance? it's been an option for me lately, so i would like to know more about it.

Less selective than other top private schools, but still not that easy.

And since your from California you might have a better shot because of your geographic distance, unless they usually get A LOT of apps from California which I am not sure of.

Acceptance rate dropped to 24 percent this year.
Even if you are accepted, if you are a weak candidate, you may just get GSP'd in the pooper. Or, if you are a minority, C-STEP'd.

24% really? That's pretty insane

thanks kwu and kingofqueens.

Really? It's that low???

I had some friends who weren't what I would consider "competitive" who made it in (barely over 2000 SATs, as in 2040 or so, hardly, if any, arts, hardly any sports other than maybe one such as football - but they weren't stars player or anything, so-so GPAs of around 3.7 or 3.8, and nothing i would really consider a remarkable achievement. also, not really any leadership)

How do they compare to you?

But one thing to consider is that it is EXPENSIVE (more than UCs by far, especially since you're a resident)

ttan, step into the real world.....2040s and 3.7s are GREAT! Believe it or not, you can go to a top 50-100 school without giving your life to the textbook, you should try it sometime.

But don't forget they accept like 12,000 applicants, though approximately a third would remain. It's definitely not as selective as the CC top schools and the ivies, but don't totally disregard its selectivity. I got in with mediocre SAT scores and a couple of accomplishments (not as distinguished as other CC members', but they are in my school). Sadly, it's too expensive, so I didn't go.

goot speaks the truth. Plus, I suspect a lot of people on this site like to stretch the truth about their stats.

Oh another piece of info if you didn't know, NYU has the most undergrads out of any private university.

thanks again for all the info.

@ ttan, yes i have thought about the tuition in comparison to the UC's. i figured that if i got in, then i would compare it to the other schools i might get accepted to and then figure out the money issue from there. plus NYU is a very expensive place to live in, obviously more than here in LA.

Really...

I guess I am in need of a harsh reality check then. I always believed those going for competitive schools would have about a 2000 on the SAT and a 3.7+ GPA with somewhat involvement in their school - and I always believed that was average for those "competing."

And for goot- GPA and SAT are pretty low in my priorities compared to DECA, Swimming, and Cello. I have tried looking for life outside a textbook =P, I'm just in need of a reality check.

But I do have to thank you guys- my perceptions were WAYYYY off.

Depends on which school you decide to apply to at NYU. Stern will pretty much require everything HYPS needs. Film (will be attending in the fall) is extremely competative, but it is based on grades and an artistic portfolio. If you apply for CAS, just make sure your SAT's and GPA are high, and write some creative essays.

FYI, you can't get "GSP'd" anymore because it is becoming its own school starting next year. However, you can choose to GSP yourself.

ttan- sorry if what I said towards you sounded harsh but it just gets old reading about kids on here that have breakdowns from a "B". I'm sure you do have a life outside of school, but from reading this board from time to time, I fear for many. I used to be the same way about grades, but after talking with my older sister, some older friends, and guidance counselor, I realized you can get a great education after high school without letting the admissions process dictate your life.

And to hapaing- good luck!

I was admitted to the College of Arts and Science with a 3.7 and a 2150. However, I attend an academically rigorous high school with very high admission standards, so my GPA is somewhat deceptive.

I was involved with tutoring, theater, cultural activities, and volunteer work.
Although my scores may be laughable compared to some of the... more academically inclined people on CC, I consider myself a remarkable person, if I may say so myself.

What I really loved was NYU's supplemental application. I can say that no other college I applied to made essay writing more personal and enjoyable.
