Hello, I just recently got accepted into UCI with the CHP but no regents. I am extremely happy ,but I was really hoping for regents because it does help financially. However I do accept that my scores may not have been enough to get regents. However, I did get into the college honor program. I read on CC that CHP is still selective but how selective is CHP compared to Regents?
What were your stats and major?
CHP is less selective, but I don’t think it is by that much (however, i don’t have an exact number of admits)
However, Regents do get money, CHP doesn’t.
1460 new SAT
32 ACT
SAT II: 770 math 2, 730 chem
GPA: 3.9792 UW
9 AP classes + 4 community college classes
Rank: 9/436
I also have a string of extra curriculars but they aren’t really strong enough to make up for my mediocre stats.
I got into CHP as well, no word on Regents. Does anyone know what qualifications you need for Regents?
UCI say there are 850 CHP students, about 3% of the undergraduate population (https://admissions.uci.edu/pdf/2017-honors-program-brochure.pdf) so that’s about 200 actually enrolling with CHP each year (which presumably includes transfers). Since only 21% of UCI freshman admits enroll overall (http://www.oir.uci.edu/files/adm/IA18-fall-fr-select-yield-by-school.pdf?R=774184) and many more of the top students have other choices, I’d estimate there are probably about 1500-2000 CHP offers (5-7% of admits), with a yield of 10-15% (though note only 75% of the admits are freshmen, so that means maybe 1200-1500 freshman CHP offers).
For Regents I couldn’t find anything directly comparable from UCI but UCSB say Regents is offered to the top 2% of admitted students. Their yield for Regents offers is sub 10% compared to an overall UCSB freshman yield of 20% (UCSB yield is very similar to UCI). If UCI do the same and offer Regents to the top 2% of admits, then that would mean ~800 Regents offers (freshmen+transfers, of which maybe 600 freshman Regents offers), of whom perhaps 50 enroll.
I would expect there is a significant overlap between Regents offers at UCSB and UCI (my D18 has been offered both), which is another contributing factor to the low yield rate. In summary, I’d estimate there are 2-2.5 times as many CHP offers as there are Regents offers. There may be 4 times as many enrolled CHP students as Regents students.
CHP has a lot of nice perks though.
I’ll provide an example of my twins DS1 and DS2. DS1 received Regents and CHP; DS2 received only CHP.
Stats-
GPA - same - 4.0 UW; 4.5 weighted.
SAT - DS1- 1550; DS2-1510
SAT II - only DS2 took - Math 2 - 800; BIO - 760
ACT - DS1 - 35; DS2 - 34
National Merit Finalist - both
APs - 5 tests taken (enrolled in 4 more this year)
Majors - DS1 - Business Administration/Econ; DS2 - Computer Science
ECs - Band for both. DS1 has some leadership in band and clubs. DS2 has more awards in music.
Overall - very close stats and ECs. Maybe it came down to personal statements and the slight differentiation in ECs
Very happy for both. Interesting that only one received Regents.
