I was researching this school and saw that it has a 59% acceptance rate, which is not that selective when compared to others schools. In US News it says it has a 62% acceptance rate, which is even less selective. Also, there is a graph where GPA and SAT/ACT scores of admitted students are shown, and they are pretty diverse, having many admitted students all over the graph. However, on many sites it is shown the average SAT scores of admitted students, and they are pretty high, especially math, being the 25th percentile a 700. How come the SAT scores are high but the graph and acceptance rate say the opposite? Maybe the graph is wrong but still the acceptance rate is above average. Just how selective is this school? I know the engineering college is more selective than the others in the school, but how much? Please someone explain, thanks!
Probably sub 30% acceptance rate for engineering. acceptance rate doesn’t mean anything. You need to look at the yield rate also.
What is a yield rate?
The rate of students who decide to go there, that maybe why it’s high if the yield rate is low.
First, the yield rate is low partly due to the very poor financial aid. So they have to admit a lot more students to fill the class. That is one of the reason for the high admission rate. Second, the applicants are mostly self-selected, so only students that think they may be able to afford and have a chance to admit would apply. With a smaller applicant pool, the admission rate is relatively higher. Third, the admission stat is largely affected by the major/program as they admit students directly into specific majors. Certain majors like Computer Science are super competitive while there are also other easier major to get in. When a student is not accepted by the first choice major, they may not commit to them at the end which also leads to a lower yield rate.
