Topic please

ask your counselor. it varies from schol to school

i always assumed clubs are started by teachers O_O

This Is a great way to start a chess club:
1.)Bring a chess board and a chess clock out to alunch table one day
2.)Put up a sign that reads,"Free food for those who can win a 5 minute game
3.) I cannot stress this enough.. BRING GOOD FOOD!!!!!
4.) People will invariably come....
5.) Loose on purpose to some, but not all, of these players
6.) The next day.... put up a sign for chess club..advertising more food

Those are the 6 easy steps to success!!

So most clubs are started out by keen students? Haha, I had a totally different prospective before. Thx for the enlightenment

Hey, is there such thing as a high school chess league? Usually these large clubs have instructions on how to set up a club on their website

It depends on what area you live in. I know in my city there's an organization that hosts a chess tournament for schools around the city every year.

Try approaching a teacher that would be interested/able to help you run it (supervision or whatever) to see if you can start a club. I think most teachers are fairly receptive to student-intiated clubs. I know at my school, there was a lot of interest in writing, so one of the LA teachers started a writing club. A guitar club was started because several students wanted to be able to learn how to play/practice guitar at lunch.

You could also start something through your library - it could be an all-ages club, if you don't get enough high schoolers. What everyone is saying, though, is get out there and NETWORK!

My S and D started a chess club in my youngest S's elementary school during their afterschool program. The elementary school has a economically and racially-mixed population of which about 50% come from welfare housing.

They contacted the after school corrdinator to see if she was interested and they offered to purchase six chess games ($4 a piece at Toys are Us) and went one afternoon a week for two years. The kids loved it - even some third graders would be eagerly waiting for them every week. And the school was thrilled to have extra activities such as this.

If you want to start a high-school chess club or any club, here's what you would do at my school:
1) Find and gather interested students.
2) Consider chess supplies. Buy them later after you get the club approved. You wouldn't want to buy all that chess equipment for nothing!
3) Find a location and supervisor for your club (a teacher to look over your club).
4) Inform an upper-tier school official (principal or such) about your interest in establishing a chess club and ask if you can get him/her to send the idea to the school district to get it approved.
4a) If not, you might have to do this yourself (if it is mandatory in the first place).
5) If you are approved (district approval isn't always mandatory... check what the policy is in your school district/area), then schedule some chess meetings/tournaments and then enjoy!

I hope this helps.

Just Propose It At An Asb Meeting... They Usually Ask You To Explain Objectives And Such... But Chess Club Is One Of Those Clubs That Is Always Accepted..

Does skill in math=skill in chess?

nope, I highly doubt it does. ;) I play chess since I was 7 or 8 and you just practice, learn strategies, etc. I think of it as a real battle, which is what it was derived from, and military strategy. Yahoo.com has a nice chess applet against real people online you can join and play for free, its good practice. :)

There are also alot of books about different tactics you can read.

Yea I play on yahoo.... 1400+ rating.... what about you?

I played on games.com

..got aim or msn? i'd like to grab a game or two

Yea I got AIM...

can u pm me it?

I dont even remember what is my rating, I havent played it in a while. :P

If you guys want to play each other, let me into it to, just pm me I have AIM aswell.

my is liquid zeny but i got block on i think..or try pm me :P

I would start with finding some people who want to be in the club. Once you have four, then approach a teacher about sponsering the club. Then you or the sponser go to the main office and get the whole thing sanctioned by the administration. At that point, put signs up in the hallway stating the meeting time and place, and try to get more members.
