How should I feel about my chances?

How should I feel about my chances as a perspective transfer for the following schools?

Gettysburg College
VMI
William & Mary
Lehigh University
Wake Forest University
Allegheny College

Heres my high school record

I have a 2.5 GPA and an ACT score of 19 from high school. However much of this was due to a learning disability in mathematics as well as a rather poor performance from freshman year of high school. None the less though I managed to do decent after freshman year and my GPA showed a strong upward trend. I also took AP classes and relived AP credit on at least two AP tests. Also my extracurricular activates throughout high school can be described as very good which included a college program for credit at Cambridge University in Britain, serving as an intern or one of the Presidential Campaigns, writing on politics and history and having my work published along with much more in terms of extracurricular activates.

So I was wondering if I do well during my first year of college and maintain a good GPA(from 3.0-3.5 or over). How should I feel about my chances at the above schools? I was waitlisted at both Gettysburg and Allegheny Colleges when I applied my senior year of high school. So I figure if I do well at my first year of college I stand a strong chance of being of getting into ether of those schools.

However what is the opinion of how I should feel about getting into these schools if I preform well at my first year of college?

Could someone please respond?

I am not sure how much help I will be but I will try to share some info I know.

LEHIGH
a minimum 3.2 GPA for transfer students
acceptance rate of a little less than 30% for transfers
a minimum of 30 credits must be taken

GETTYSBURG
a minimum 2.5 GPA

WAKE FOREST
a minimum 2.0 GPA
acceptance rate of around 25% for transfers

WILLIAM AND MARY
a minimum 3.0 GPA
acceptance rate of around 50% for transfers

These schools are great schools and I wish you the best of luck. Even though a school like Wake Forest, which is a great institution, requires only a 2.0…I would encourage you to definitely surpass that and do as well as you possibly can. I think aiming for a around a 3.5 would give you the best opportunity to get in because some of these schools will require standardized test scores and a high school transcript (which might work against you).

Also look on Collegeboard…which is where I got most of the info. It will help a bit with what you must do to apply. Good luck and I am sure your determination will lead you to attend one of these schools.

I think you are on your way. Try and start of really strong because when you first apply they will only see first semester. Obviously, you must do well second semester to because some may ask for spring semester grades (and if you get accepted they will check those grades at the end of the year).

Thank you for giving me these statistics and your input!

However do you think my high school record will hold me back in regards to these schools?

Your HS gpa may effect you more on certain applications, such as WF and William and Mary. All in all though don’t worry to much about your HS gpa…thats set already and you can’t change that. The most important thing is to do well in college and present other colleges with a strong gpa and a well written essay. good luck to you!

Ok, yeah I figured my HS GPA would be much less relevant as a transfer student even if I were to transfer from my current institution after one year.

Again I think you for your advice!

Anymore opinions on my chances from anyone?

can’t really chance ya without your sat scores

3.0 and 3.5 are very very very different…

plus if you are gonna be a sophomore transfer, sat/act would be important.

With 1300+ SAT, 3.5-3.6 will be the lowest you can get away with for W&M and Wake

All the others you shouldnt have much of an issue with

If you are applying as a freshman I would shoot for 3.8 to 4.0. If you are apply as a sophomore I would shoot for at least 3.7 to 3.9 by the end of your fall semester (sophomore year).

If you are applying as a freshman they will look more into your high school grades and because your high school grades are on the low side might cause some of these competitive schools to throw your application to the side. If you can write convincing essays and get really great teacher recommendations, then you will stand a better chance. As you can see colleges like Wake Forest are really competitive and select transfer students who have worked hard and earned those spots. Good look and if you don’t get in at first you can always reapply the following year.
