How should I go about getting a job?

I'm in my sophomore year right now, and I hope to get a job this summer before my junior year. I want a job so that the college admins know I can handle at least a little bit of work, and that I am competent enough to do so.

I'm skilled in handling computers and know many of the specifications. I could easily work at Best Buy, and I could probably do a job finding bugs in C++ or HTML based on past exposure. Should I go about asking mom&pop tech stores to hire me? or should I "volunteer" myself to get paid in community service hours? Do you think they are likely to accept me, or does McDonald's yield a higher chance?

I've made around $1000 in the past year helping my parents sell old items on Amazon and Ebay, but other than that I have no past work.

Would studying for an extra AP look more impressive?

I would start by applying for a job. I got a 5 in AP Common Sense.

Look for the “Help Wanted” sign.

If you apply for a job make sure you do it during maybe march or before school ends because if you apply during summer lots of places will not be hiring because the college students will be back.

def ask the mom&pop stores, especially if you know the owner. otherwise, depending on how skilled you are, you could try asking maybe a family friend or someone you know who works at a larger company (ex. my dad works for a prominent speech recognition company and said he would try to get me some sort of position there… needless to say he was too lazy to ask, but i have had a job since before soph yr so it didn’t really affect me) if they could get you maybe an internship or let you shadow someone.

also, if there are any local software companies or maybe a federal agency in your area, try there. my brother’s best friend from HS made like $20+ a week coding for some company in my town during HS, so if you’re a hotshot programmer let them know you’re interested

OR write apps. a friend of mine and i had been planning on doing this for a while but senior year is too busy. you’re a soph so run free and create apps

EDIT: Also, I’m like 90% sure you need to be 18+ to work at places like Best Buy, Radio Shack, an Apple Store etc.
And also, IMO comm. service = overrated. Jobs ftw (coming from someone with <20 hrs of comm service, yet ~3000 work hours)

Thanks for the tips ozzy and forzworn! It’s good advice.

apply when there is a “now hiring” sign posted

Something like 26% of teens are unemployed right now who want to be employed.

I have this one friend who is a very determined person. When she sets out to do something, she does it. She’s applied at every restaurant/shop she’s been to and still hasn’t managed to find a bite.

Getting a job isn’t that easy in this economy.

You’re no longer competing with 16 and 17 year olds for a job, you’re also competing with 30-40-50 year olds.

Tell your parents. They know a lot of people than you think. They can help you about.
My dad contacted his friends and I now have 4 seasonal part time jobs. All because of my dad.

@AUGirl Ah I definitely hear you. It’s going to be a tough slog.
@webass I sure hope my parents have some connections :P
