How should I identify myself for "race"?

I am an Chinese male applicant. My last name (Yang) is a common Asian last name. On the common app, I have three options:

1) fill out nothing, but they will probably tell from my last name that I'm Asian anyways

2) fill out "Asian"

3) fill out "Asian", and put "Chinese" under this category

My question is, does it matter how I fill out my race, or will one of the above options give me a better chance of getting into a school?

I'm not the type of person who gets offended easily, so by all means be honest :)

I don’t think it is going to make a difference for you chance wise. I’d just mark as you wish and worry about the other parts of your app. I would tend to mark Asian.

Mark Asian. Don’t hide your race.

Yeah I agree with you guys. Then does it make a difference whether I do 2) or 3)?

Do Asian and Chinese. Let them know who you are.

There really is no difference. You can’t change your race. Just focus on bettering other parts of your application, as another poster said.
