How should I start preparing for the SAT?

I am going to be a Sophomore this September and I am going to take the SAT most likely the end of Junior year.

I haven't had any type of prep, but I have begun to learn some vocabulary with flashcards starting yesterday, what else should I be doing?

Should I buy a prep book or is it not worth the money?
If so, what prep book should I buy? Barron's, princeton, kaplan, etc.

it’s really admirable that you are starting to prep this early! I just started junior year and I just opened a SAT math book today lol  the Barrons book for math is really good if math is your weak spot. Barrons books in general for the SAT are good. Don’t waste money on a private tutor or anything…just get some books, work through them, take the PSAT this fall and you are golden :D

A lot of people say Gruber’s math is good for people in the 500s, and Dr. Chungs math is good for upper 600s who want perfects.
I suggest taking a diagnostic test (meaning a real prac. SAT test). However, I strongly advise you NOT to take an official College Board one YET because you are new. CB tests are extremely valuable as very few are out there. Take a Kaplan/Barrons/Sparknotes/whatever test and see how you do, so you know what your weak spot(s) is/are. Don’t get disappointed if you aren’t in the 2000s (or where ever you want to be). A lower score means you have room to grow. If you already have a 2350, where do you start preparing?
Direct Hits is the best book(s) for CR. It has about 400 vocab words. Supposed to REALLY IMPROVE CR. By far the best. I can give them to you for free, PM me!
Kaplan also helps your passage-based reading. I use it
I suggest reading silverturtle’s sat guide. Its somewhere on the forum, just search. It will give you a lot of background info for the sat, and will introduce you to it.
Hope this helps!

Get the CollegeBoards’s SAT Study Guide Second edition (we call it the blue book{bb})
Get the Grubers SAT math book
Get Dr Chungs SAT Math (ONLY use it when you’re getting over 650 in the math section of the sat)
Get Direct Hits and memorize those words and try using them all in sentences
Get real SAT’s from past years
go over each question you get wrong and try to not make the same mistakes
Everything I just mentioned is basically a must get. Other books such as Barrons/Princeton Review, etc are ok but not always recommended.

Oh, and read OLD novels and NY Times and Wall Street Journal
Do all this and you should easily get a 2250+
