My psat scores were pretty embarassing but I also didn't study. Some of the tutors in my area are charging ridiculous amounts of money for sat tutoring and I don't feel like making my parents pay all that much. Is there honestly any way you can raise your score tremendously by studying by yourself? And how would you study? Thankss guys!

look at prep books, memorize vocab (this is very time-consuming! < - I should know), take a tremendous number of practice tests, learn to concentrate

If you don't have much time, do not waste your time memorizing words. Go to the library and read the SAT Prep books and polish up your math.

If you're on a budget you can borrow books from the library. If you're not a reading type and prefer using a computer (like me), I suggest www.smartdoodle.com bc it's free and it helped me out.

If you're diligent you can definitely raise your score with hard work. If you live where there's a good library system, you might find reasonably recent and decent (hey, rhyming late at night, whee!) materials. But SAT books are pretty cheap.

I would start with Cracking the SAT (Princeton Review) for an overall review and for strategy. It also has 4 tests, and they are really good. Then get the College Board "blue book" with the official tests. Key for practice, but it doesn't have answer explanations (the PR book does, but for their tests, not CB's). For more practice, get PR's 11 Practice Tests book. And just plug away.

You could also do an online course; they're pretty cheap. You can still get access to an instructor without paying for a private tutor.
