How should you choose subjects?

This might seem like a stupid question to some of you, but I'm not sure what the right approach is when it comes to deciding which subject tests you want to take. Do you want to show the colleges that you've mastered a wide variety of courses -- some science, some humanities -- or do you want to show them the subjects that are really your forte?

For me, specifically, I know that most people take one of the Math tests because some colleges require that you do, so I'm planning on doing that. I also figured (hopefully logically) that you should go with the subjects that you tend to well in, so I decided that I'll take a Spanish exam. Aside from that, I'm not so sure.

I tend to be a humanities-leaning personality type, but I like all of my subjects. For my final subject test, I could either try to demonstrate that, despite the humanities-related things that are bound to be in the rest of my application, I like the sciences too (with a physics test), or I could emphasize how much I'm into literature with the literature test. Which of the two options is what the colleges want to see? I guess I'm really just not sure about what the intention of the subject test requirement is, so I don't know how best to give them the information that they want.

Haha, I know that was really long, so thanks for even reading all of it! Any help would be appreciated. If this has already been discussed, just point me in the right direction, please :)

Muchas gracias!

bump

Any help at all? :)

What are your potential majors? If they are science related, it would be a good idea to go ith Physics. Otherwise, go with what you feel most comfortable taking.

Why Physics?
Biology is freakin awesome!

:D

You should take Literature (humanities type) and Math II :D

Is it strongly recommended that you take a humanities SAT II? All I'm going to take/have taken are Biology, Chemistry and Math II.

Lit and Math2 are both popular, but be forewarned that lit is extremely difficult

^ I hear that Literature is extremely difficult but I don't really hear about people getting ready to take them often...

Most times, people near me take 2 sciences and Math 2.

Depends on what the schools you're applying to want, to be honest with you :/

You could take one science and one math (for the engineering/techie schools) and then one humanities (Lit?) to fulfill the normal 1-humanity-1-math requirement most Liberal Arts colleges ask for.

Good luck!

Thanks for all your replies! :)

I won't be applying to engineering schools, and I probably won't major in a science (except maybe psychology). I'm definitely more into the humanities, but I'd be comfortable with math and physics, which I like, too. I think I'll apply to LACs and Ivy League schools. The problem is that I don't know what those schools would want. I've looked at my potential schools' websites, and they don't go into specific subjects. Is there a general rule for what a selective general "college of the arts and sciences" is looking for?

Do they want to see subjects that you might major in? Or do they want to see some breadth to prove that you can handle a lot of different subjects?

bump

Can anyone else answer my question? ("Do they [colleges] want to see subjects that you might major in? Or do they want to see some breadth to prove that you can handle a lot of different subjects?")

I just did what the admissions officers always say and took everything I thought I could get a good score in. Or you could try to take ones from different subjects.. definitely math II and maybe a science and then a humanities one. =P
