Right now, I'm currently selecting courses for my Junior year in High School. So far I have:
- AP Bio
- AP Chem
- US History Honors (APUSH only offered to seniors)
- Pre-Calc Honors
- AP Language and Composition
- Organic Chemistry Honors
- Statistics Honors
- [Independent Study] Experimental Research and Design

Right now, I have one slot available for another set of electives or a full-year course. Currently, I have that spot reserved for an art class. If I do take the class, that'd be my second year with art. But I realized that instead of doing art, I could choose another academic course, such as AP Human Geography. But some of my friends suggest that I stick to Fine Arts because "colleges like to see consistency."

Are arts courses really that significant for college? Or should I add another academic course so my schedule is more challenging? I'm planning on going into a science major, by the way, so it's not as if I'd need any involvement in the arts in the future.

unless you are heavily involved in the arts, don’t bother taking a second year. Most Colleges don’t look for a fine art credit, and even then there are very few that do look for a fine art credit, and when they do it’s only a year of a consecutive fine art. Take another AP instead.

You should take whatever you’re interested in. If that’s art, then take the art class.

Also, if you’re mainly interested in taking the AP Human Geo exam, and not so much the class, then just take art. AP Human Geography is pretty much the easiest AP test and isn’t a problem to just self-study.

Art is only impressive if you make it impressive; if you are going to win awards or contribute to the community with art shows or art lessons or painting murals and such, go for it. If you want to study art in college, definitely do it.
And if you know you’ll enjoy it more than AP Human Geo, which isn’t a very impressive AP course anyway (at least in my area it’s considered a joke), take art instead.
The consistency isn’t a big issue but it’d be nice if you kept it up.
