how significant is the difficulty of college courses?

Should I prioritize getting a high gpa or taking difficult classes? I'm an engineering major at a very well-ranked school and I will have to choose between taking the standard class to fulfill an in-major requirement (which most people take) and taking an advanced version of the class, which not many people take/qualify for. It's basically the difference between a 100-level and a 200-level course. I'll have to take the same number of classes in the end anyway, so taking the 200-level won't let me take any more classes, only more difficult ones.

Is it worth it to take the harder course and possibly get a worse grade? Would employers look so closely at my transcript as to notice if I did?

You shall ask yourself whether you are going to school to learn, to gain knowledge, to get educated, or just to get a highe GPA.

atleast at my university the honors classes had a much nicer curve than the regular classes, so if you would get an A in the regular class you probably would get it in the honors version as well

Take the classes you are interested in. If you care about the material, you are more likely to do well in a class. Choose the easier version for classes that are required, but are boring. If you don’t want to take a class, you’ll probably spend less time on the work and get a worse grade.
