The college I want to go to only accepts English Lang for the exemption from the freshmen English course, English Lit is just general ed.

Are the two courses similar?
Could I take the class for English Lit, then take the English Lang exam also?

They’re similar to some degree, however, the biggest difference is that AP Lit deals only with fiction and poetry while AP Lang is more inclined to non fiction, such as persuasive and expository texts. You’ll have to learn plenty of rhetorical terms for AP Lang, and although some may show up in your AP Lit class, most of those terms are exclusive for AP Lang. You may give it a try, but I strongly suggest that you also self study for AP Lang.

Check their respective course descriptions at the College Board’s website so that you can get a better idea by yourself.

Yes, if you’ve got the skills for Lit you can take Lang, most likely. It’s a different test, though–esp. because it has a DBQ (synthesis) essay and an Argument essay. MCQ is like more advanced SAT CR.

Sigil nailed it. In my opinion ap lit is more difficult due to poetry and requires you to retain novels that you have read to do well on the essays. While ap Lang essays you explore the basic functions of rhetorical terms in passages, I feel like lit is based on more depth of analysis- dont get me wrong, Lang still requires you to analyze the work.
