I'm a California CC transfer applicant and I have applied to the schools in the title as a junior-year philosophy major. My second semester was pretty bad (2 F's in a 4 unit and 5 unit/credit class), which has had adverse effects on my GPA. The poor semester was influenced by medical problems and I explained the situation in my personal statement. Since the poor semester, I've earned 13 A's and 1 or 2 B's. My GPA after submitting my WIP is 2.98. I don't have any E.C.'s besides full time work and I belong to an informal philosophy group that meets at a coffee shop every week. I believe I made a compelling case for my poor semester in my personal statement, but I have a feeling they will put too much emphasis on my GPA and reject me.

How slim do you guys think my chances at being accepted are?

p.s. Should I be rejected by every school, would the fact that my GPA will be 3.32 after the current semester help my chances at an appeal?

your chances are not lost. don't worry about it that much. if you did explain everything about the situation in the personal statement and improved your grades, you have a very good chance. don't worry too much especially philosophy is not that highly selective.

I have a similar story to yours and a rep from UCLA told me that as long as i included it in the personal center and improved my grades afterwards, i am ok.

Keep me informed if you have any news or questions.

aebeys: Thanks for the information. I can't help worrying because these three schools are my only options since I haven't taken speech. I guess I'll have to wait it out. I'd really like to go to UCSD and I'm afraid my only chances will be through an appeal.

uclover8: UCR might not be the best of the UC schools, but it might end up being the best that I can get into with my GPA. UCR will be better than staying at a community college.

a UC stays a UC: one might be more competitive or popular but it's the same system.

Slightly -- I am very worried too but your improvement says a lot about you. you got great grades after that means nothing makes you stop achiving your goals and believe that's what they are looking for in a person.

Mine all are pending. i am worried too, but don't stress out too much.

thats odd, u apply to UCR over SB. SB is the only school that claims to accept everyone w/ IGETC and 60 units automaticly. I'd take advantage of that. EVenthough i think UCR will take u too.

Will I be able to appeal a decision based on the fact that after the current semester my GPA will move from 2.98 to 3.36? Or will I have to apply for the Spring 2006 term with those grades? Arg, I'd hate to have to stay at my college right now. Plus, I don't know what else I'd take since I've satisfied all of my requirements.
