I am an incoming transfer student and I applied for on campus housing, but i received an off campus apartment. I filed a CAR because I have 2 buddies living in plazas and I liked their social aspect. It got denied, so I will be living in the Margan apartments. I was wondering if the off campus apartments were as social or nearly as social as the plazas. Will I enjoy it there or end up hanging with my friends at their plaza?

It depends on you. There’s not as much stuff that goes on in the apartments. They sometimes have get togethers or events for basketball games and stuff like that, but its definitely nothing like living on campus. If your friends got a plaza in Sunset Village, it’s not that much different from the apartments. I found those plazas to be fairly antisocial.

A lot of it is what you make of it though. There are chances to be social in both scenarios, but one is more friendly towards the person who isn’t used to going out and trying to be social (living on campus).

So will I still be able to make friends with people in my floor like you can in a dorm, or is everything more secluded in the apartments?

It’s definitely a lot harder to meet people. It really depends on who is open on leaving their door open or talking. Aside from a few people on my floor, it was near impossible to make friends without going out of my way to meet people (like knocking on their door to hang out or something, which I never did but you could!)

Things are generally more secluded.

Hahaha eff that. I hope I can at least be good friends with my room mates, study there, and hang out on the hill. Or import some fun friends from home and people might gravitate to out apartment if were loud enough. And hopefully not gravitate to tell us to shut the hell up.

where did you live Altema, and aren’t transfers more career oriented in a sense, so more students will be focusing on post grad years instead of making friends?

I lived in Westwood Chateau. Ummmm, I wouldn’t say that. Transfers just transferred, so they want to make friends because they usually will have little to no friends.

O shoot those are nice, at least from the pictures I have seen they are. Have you ever been inside the Margan apartments? And if you have how are they?

Nawww, sorry, I’ve never been there!

Westwood Chateau was nice
I miss those apartments!

Ya those did look really nice from the pictures. Arent they the newest? And do you need your bruincard to enter the apartments? Or do they use a different key card? And sorry one more question, did u buy an off campus meal plan?

I hear they are the newest. The bathroom was all brand new. Kitchen wasn’t new but it was still totally fine.

I used a separate card key to get in.

I didn’t buy an off campus meal plan. I can cook so I didn’t need it. It’s REALLY expensive to buy that, but I guess if you cant cook and don’t want to live off top ramen, you might have to do it.

what’s the price comparison between apartments and other dorms? isn’t it much more?

Its actually much less

You can look the prices at UCLA’s housing website.

Just off the top of my head, but my dorm cost like 13k and my apartment cost like 7-7.5k. Dorm is more convenient but Apartment is so much cheaper.

This link always comes in so handy :)

it’s not so much cheaper, since you have to include food/meals as well (and for those leasing outside units, a 12 month lease when you can’t find subletters will dent you some). But it is a bit cheaper.

heavy emphasis on cooking yourself. I fed myself on 20 bucks a week, so I saved a ton compared to dorms.

If you live in a greek house, do you still eat at the dorms?

No, you don’t in the dorms. They usually have catering services which are sometimes bad/good and it’s usually only two meals (lunch, dinner).

Yeah, I’ve been trying to cook more often, lunch is still a major issue though. Time is a serious management issue, I think last quarter I was on campus from 10AM-6/7 PM each night.

That is what I was worried about. Do you guys think the 5 meal plan for off campus would be a good investment so I could get lunch each day at school, or dinner if I am with my friends studying on campus?
