How Southern is Southern?

I'm from a suburban town in Southeastern Michigan and I am seriously considering going to SMU. I was wondering how southern this school is, because other than it being far away and southern it really could be a great place for me! I'm excited for adventure but also scared of being different.

Hey jamiehinz,

Our name is Southern Methodist University, but that has more to do with our heritage than anything! Today just a little under half of our students come from Texas, with the next top ten states being California, Florida, Illinois, Tennessee, Missouri, Georgia, Arizona, Connecticut, Louisiana, and New York. One of the things I love about SMU is that it’s truly a national university - the people here are from EVERYWHERE and I now have friends from literally every state (even North Dakota) and all over the world. I think it says a lot that 25% of students are from California and 10% of students are international. So while we are in Dallas (which is very cosmopolitan) and there’s Southern hospitality, there are many people from the North and everywhere else. Feel free to message me with any more questions you may have

I completely agree with johnangle! I’m from Missouri and the majority of my friends are from the Chicago area or St. Louis so there are plenty of Northerners here!

I lived in Detroit suburbs for a while so using that as a comparison, SMU is absolutely gorgeous, top notch university with great teachers and students, who like is said above, come from all over. My D has friends from Texas, Utah, Illinois etc and is so happy she chose SMU. Hot in summer but nothing better than walking to class in winters when it is 60 degrees. Sure, not Mich or MSU size but bigger in heart and may be even better academically. Just like any college, there are differences in students but that brings people together too. Good luck!

I’m not really considering SMU- but I’ve lived in Dallas my whole life and though you will meet the occasional person with an accent or have a traditional “southern” attitude- people here are mostly just like anywhere else.
The major differences is the men are more gentlemanly, the women can are cattier, and everyone says ya’ll.

Thank you so much for all your help! I’ve been accepted and am hoping to visit in the near future to get a feel for the adjustment.

What my D likes most about SMU is that she won’t be a number. She will have the opportunity to know her professors and vise versa, and even spend time with them outside of class. She was accepted EA from oos to UTAustin McCombs but chose SMU because she felt at home.

Good luck to you!

just got into smu. live a few blocks from campus, don’t know if i will attend.

My thoughts: its in one of the nicest neighborhoods any college could be situated in–highland park (hp and smu cops suck tho); it gets HOT, be prepared for high 90s and 100+ degree weather for a few months. Its literally in the center of Dallas, there is so much to do: concerts, parties, bars everywhere, great social community, great facilities, frats etc. SMU does not make the city like many colleges do. the campus is incredible. great academics.
