How strict are "GPA Requirements" ?

I'm a current student at a smaller, lesser-known private liberal arts college... Looking to transfer to a 2nd/3rd tier LAC / smaller public college. However, My gpa sucks. Its a low 2. If a college states that they have a minimum gpa transfer of 2.5 -- should one ever bother applying? Experiences, comments, etc welcome..

for the record, I'm 20 - and will be a 3rd year.

thanks!

Schools won’t consider your application if your GPA is less than the minimum requirement. I suggest you take some classes at a community college to boost your GPA, and inquire about LAC that accepts senior transfer students.

Do you have any proof?

If the school states that there’s a minimum gpa, that sounds like a requirement, not a recommendation. Call the admissions office to confirm.

Ive heard that if a school doesn’t fill up their “quota” for transfer students, they will look past gpa minimums…

but I digress — calling the admissions office sounds like a good idea.

Usually petty strict, the UC’s publish their admissions rates so I am drawing my information from them and they admit an average of 10% of applicants who are bellow their official cutoff of 2.4. Just going by staticstics, and assuming that you have a 10% chance at all of the schools you apply to, you would need to apply to 22 schools in order to have a 90% chance of getting into a university. As for schools not filling up their quota, that doesn’t happen anymore.

Your best bet would be to take more classes an improve your GPA. Since it is a low 2, I assume that you have had a few D’s and F’s, you can retake those classes and get a better grade. Most schools will replace the failing grade with the retake.
