How strict is UT on deadlines?

I submitted my University of Texas at Austin application last night and after I submitted it showed me a screen with other admission requirements that were needed.
Here's my problem:
The registrar at our school had taken a leave of absence and did not return until yesterday. My transcripts were not sent out until today. Although they were overnighted and will arrive in Texas Saturday at the latest (I'm from California), the rule on the website says, "Must arrive at the admissions office by the December 1st deadline"

I called the admissions office and the operator was very rude and did not help my predicament at all. He basically told me to just wait it out and see. My question for you CCers is: should I just withdraw my app if my transcripts won't get to the office on time?

From what I’ve seen and heard, if UT sets a deadline and you don’t meet it, there’s no point in trying to turn in stuff late. They won’t take it. That’s what I was told by one of the admissions people at a visit.

I called today, I have the same problem I overnighted my transcript. I was told, “There are no guarantees, but usually we have been somewhat generous regarding transcripts the day after.”

I heard from a UT adcom that the applications that are completed after the deadline are put in a pile that is only looked at if they have extra room.

They should have faxed a copy. And on another note, did your school not make arrangements for someone else to fulfill transcript duties?

izelkay - That’s what I’ve been afraid of. That there was no point in staying up all night last night reviewing my app when I couldn’t get my transcripts in on time. :/

bbrower21 - That is somewhat relieving actually. The guy I talked to also said there was no guarantee, but “you will just have to wait and see.” so I was just kind of left in the dark.

Thank you both for your feedback! Good luck on your admissions! :)

jd - Really? Well I’m hoping they have some room for me! Thank you!

collegeshopping - Would that have sufficed until my official transcript was mailed? I wish I would have known that earlier! Thank you!

Good luck to the both of you as well! :)

collegeshopping - They did, but the registrar was the only one who had access to our school seal that they stamp the transcript with so all the transcripts that were sent out were technically “unofficial”

Also, I don’t want to test the university’s process, but I doubt that they can file over 30,000 apps by tomorrow morning. Chances are if you paid you’re $75 plus the $10 to send each test score, they aren’t going to pull the “leftover pile” card, but who knows. Time will tell. Disappointing to say the least, I just read this policy today. And the fact that you can’t have your transcript faxed is a little annoying as well.

bbrower21 - we are SO on the same page! Even our career tech was like “why can’t I just fax it?!”. But you do make make a valid point. And I had no other option than to overnight it. I couldn’t hop on a plane and fly to Austin just to turn in my transcripts on time. Not saying this isn’t my fault because it completely is, but I just wish it wasn’t so incovenient. I guess we will just have wait it out and hope for the best.

Yup, I plan on calling tomorrow at noon (when my transcript is supposed to arrive), but also transcripts are shipped through snail mail usually. Meaning transcripts sent 2 weeks ago could possibly not be there they have to give some leeway. Plus, they extended the honors deadline, so my question is, If they tell us they won’t accept it, would we be better off submitting the honors application to assure ourselves of a fair review?

Exactly, there is always a possibility of transcripts getting lost in the mail and other misfortunes happening that they have to be somewhat open-minded. That’s a good point concidering that would give extend our deadline until Tuesday. But also, it says on the MyStatus page all materials have to meet the Dec 1 deadline and the honors application can be turned in by Dec 6. So would they put our honors applications with our regular applications in the “leftover pile” if that be the case?

This is why there is no point stressing over it, it’s out of our hands. Good Luck. I’ll post tomorrow on what they tell me.

Good luck to you too. Thanks for the feedback!

OK, so I called the other day and my admissions counselor said if it was in by December 2nd you’re fine.
