how strict is your school?

I don't go to school in the US, and after having talked to some friends who have, I'm amazed at the difference between my school and their American schools. I'm curious if that was just their schools, or if its common in USA.

How strict is your school about things such as:
- attendance
- homework
- staying on school grounds
- coming late to class
- walking in the halls during class (for exmaple if going to the restrooms)
- etc
?

Attendance: If you're not in class you get infractions, get enough infractions and you lose priveleges.

Homework: depends on the teacher

Staying on school grounds: Crazy strict. I go to boarding school, so they have to know where you are all the time. In order to go off campus, you have to fill out your card with where you're going, how you're getting there, when you're leaving and getting back, and then get it signed by the administrator on duty and when you get back you have to check back in with them.

Late to class: If you're late, you get infractions. Again, get enough infractions and you lose priveleges (you may have to turn your cell phone in at night, lose internet hours, etc.)

Walking in the halls during class: No one cares. I spend more time wandering around the halls during my free periods than actually doing something.

Attendance: get points taken off your final grade for each unexcused absence (i.e. your parents have to write you a note if you're sick)
Homework: depends on the teacher
Staying on school grounds: we're allowed to leave the campus whenever we don't have class, and since we're in the middle of NYC, that gives us a lot of options.
Coming late to class: depends on the teacher, but generally speaking if you don't have a good excuse they can take off points.
Walking in the halls during class: very lenient. You're allowed to be anywhere in the building if you don't have class.

attendance= call in sick and you're fine (unless you are sick once a week). Otherwise you get a cut major and that's an hour and a half detention

homework= the teachers don't say anything if you don't do it, but of course they take off points. homework is worth 15% so you should do it because it's a solid grade

staying on campus= can only leave if you're a senior or if your parents sign you out. Otherwise if you leave you get a cut major (even if you don't have class)

coming late to class= some teachers are ok with that others aren't. The ones that aren't give you a minor (if you don't have a note from another teacher). If you don't sign in by 8:15 you also get a minor, so even if you don't have a class you need to get to school on time

walking in the hallways during class= if you're not going to the bathroom or don't have class this doesn't happen, classes are small so the teacher will notice if you don't come back

dress code= strict.
-jeans only on fridays
-you can't wear shorts past november 15th
-shorts and skirts have to reach your knee
-no flipflops (unless they are completely leather)
-no sweatpants
-can only wear uniforms on game days if you wear the whole thing with sneakers

Attendance - 2 unexcused tardies = detention, 3 = 2% cut in your final grade in all classes (some teachers are pretty laid back about tardies, though. one teacher doesn't even count you tardy if you're five mintes late, but another will mark you tardy if you're just not in your seat when the bell rings)

Homework - they don't say anything, but you definitely lose points, one teacher even cuts your score by half if the homework is one day alate

Staying on school grounds - freshman and sophomores must eat in the cafeteria, fresh. soph. and juniors must take study hall if they have open block, and only seniors can leave during school hours without a parent excusing them

Walking in halls - not a big thing. I see a lot of kids milling around during classtime, and nothing ever happens

attendance; several unexcused will result in .. iono, its in the handbook but im not sure.

homework; depends on the teacher. they give you a dirty look. probably few points off of your grade, but we don't have a rubric or anything so no one knows.

staying on school grounds; doesn't matter. we can go out during freetime or lunch. (but needs to be in several blocks radius)

coming late to class; depends on teacher. some teachers don't care, some teachers give a whole lecture

walking in the halls during class (for exmaple if going to the restrooms); doesn't matter AT ALL. we have lots of frees so we just sleep in the hallway and all.

etc

-attendance: one unexcused and you're not allowed to exempt any exams. 5 excused absences, then after that you lose exemption privileges.
-homework: depends on teacher. some will let you turn in anything from the current quarter, no matter how late it is
-staying on school grounds: closed campus except for exam days
-comming late to class: marked tardy if not present during attendance. If you show up late, but before attendance some teachers will mark you as present
-walking in the halls during class: detention if you're caught without a pass.

attendance: 10 unexcused absences and you fail the quarter (it's really up to the discretion of the teacher, though). Excused absences are at the discretion of the teacher.

homework: Some teachers don't even grade homework, but some are very strict about it. It varies a lot.

staying on school grounds: Seniors who are over 18 can sign out whenever they want to. Others have to stay on campus unless a parent excuses them.

coming late to class: Depends on the teacher.

walking in the halls during class (for exmaple if going to the restrooms): Some teachers will allow you to leave if you ask, some won't. Nobody in the halls will stop you for walking during class because they'll generally assume your teacher let you go.

etc: Be more specific.

attendance: 7 absences per trimester means you get an administrative no credit for each class, but then you have to have a meeting with the dean of students to review the absences (so the no credit is very easily taken away, and you get your normal grade). Also, an absence is considered excused if your parents write you a note, call the school, or come in with you and explain.

homework: Depends on the teacher. I have some classes that I could never turn in homework and get an A+ if I did well on tests and such, but some that you're screwed if you don't do your homework every night exactly right.

staying on school grounds: Juniors and seniors who are passing 4 classes and whose parents have said ok get off-campus whenever they have free time (lunch, free period, etc). You have to sign in and out, but you don't have to say where you're going or anything.

coming late to class: Usually depends on the teacher, but for the most part if you're less than five minutes late they don't care. If they do, people just say they were in a guidance appointment or something and they never challenge it.

walking in the halls during class (for example if going to the restrooms): No one cares. Enough people have free periods/teachers aren't there to not be able to keep track of who's actually supposed to be in class.

Other: From what I hear about other schools, mine is REALLY relaxed. Like is a teacher is 15 minutes late to class, we can just leave. They really trust us.

(normal public school ~1000 kids, by the way)

attendance: 16 absences (excused or not) and you fail the year. 8 to fail a semester

homework: Depends on the teacher. But if you don't do it, it's at your own peril.

staying on school grounds: Seniors can sign themselves out. Others need a parent to sign them out. Technically, we are not allowed to leave during our assigned lunch hour, but they don't enforce that.

coming late to class: Detention, some teachers will let you off the hook, unless you **** them off.

walking in the halls during class: Some teachers will make to ask to go to the bathroom, I have one that just lets us go so we aren't "treated like babies." Nobody will stop you in the hall, even thought they can.

etc: No dress code at our school (as long as you aren't naked), extremely liberal about political action, and generally laid-back teachers. Yeah, I kind of like my school as far as rules go. Because it is so big in size (2,700 students), rules aren't really enforced. Everything is pretty reasonable, you go to class, do your work, go home.

-attendance: 10 times late or tardy you loose privileges
-homework: depends on the teacher, in most cases it will affect a homework grade that gets averaged in with exams, tests and quizzes
-school grounds: need parent to excuse you.
-late to class: depends on teacher, in a few I'm usually there before the teacher
- hall walking: you are supposed to have a pass, but i've never been stopped with or without.

Wow... I'm glad I don't go to any of your schools!

attendance: We have to take a note to the attendance office and get these things called "ReAdmits". The office keeps two copies and we get one. The one we get we take to all our teachers to verify our absence. If we don't do this, we get truancies. 3 or more truancies and you're supposed to get a "u" for unsatisfactory in conduct in all of your classes (though not all teachers enforce this), and if you reach a certain number (I forget how many) you can get a citation and end up in court.

homework: depends on the teacher. I have a Government class where I hardly did any homework last semester and I got a 93 in the class. OTOH, I have some classes where if you miss even one assignment, it can drastically effect your grade (especially if you're inbetween grades).

staying on school grounds:This depends on the students. They keep all the gates (besides the main gate) locked at all times except for lunch, because some kids have off-campus lunch passes and can go off at lunch. Some students leave at lunch anyway because they have no classes after lunch. However, in order to leave, we have to have stickers on our ID that show what classes we have unscheduled so that we can leave. If we forget our ID, we have to purchase a temporary (good for 1 day only) for $1.00. If we lose it, we have to purchase a new one for $5.00. Also, if you're over 18 and your parents sign a waiver, you can sign yourself out and write your own notes to get ReAdmits and early-outs.

coming late to class: Depends on the teacher. School policy says that we're supposed to get sent to On Campus Suspension (AKA OCS) unless we have a parent or other note, but not all teachers enforce it.

-walking in the halls during class (for exmaple if going to the restrooms): They don't really care. We have to carry these big red passes, so they can tell who's not supposed to be there. Also, if you're a teacher's aide, you get a special attachment to your ID that says what teacher you aide for and what period you aide. It makes it SO MUCH EASIER because you don't have to carry a pass, just your ID.

etc: My school's rather strict (if you ask most of the students)...we're a public school, but we have very strict uniforms, and we have to wear our IDs around our necks at all times.

Oh, some more rules that just came to mind:
-Only sophomores and above can get off-campus lunch passes
-Only seniors can get permits to park in the parking lot (and they take everything but a blood sample before they'll give you a permit)
-If your parking permit isn't displayed properly or it falls off, they tow your car
-If anyone pulls a senior prank, they don't get to walk at graduation
The list goes on.

attendance: Call in and you're fine. You won't get detention but after 10 unexcused absences, you can fail the class.

homework: Depends on the teacher. When you're only given a day to do something small they expect it there, but if it's a big project a lot of teachers will bend on the due date.

staying on school grounds: VERY strict. Our parking lot is locked during school hours.

coming late to class: Pretty lenient unless it becomes chronic, then they'll start marking you tardy and you usually get lunch detention with that teacher after about 5 tardies.

walking in the halls during class (for exmaple if going to the restrooms): They don't care unless you're just randomly wandering around.

All girls Catholic school. 'Nuff said.

psychgirl, how is it at your school?

attendance: depends on the teacher/class. for example, if it's an AP or honors class, attendance is taken seriously, but for stupid pointless classes they don't care if you come during the middle of the period

homework: depends on the teacher, some will take late work, some won't.

staying on school grounds: people can usually get away with driving somewhere during lunch. there are rules against it, but they're not really enforced

coming late to class: see attendance

walking in the halls during class (for exmaple if going to the restrooms): unless you're being extremely loud and annoying, which happens a lot, you can usually stay in the halls. you're not supposed to, but again, no one enforces it.

attendance: 10 unexcused absences and you fail the class. 1 unexcused you have to serve a saturday school to make it up (its optional tho)

homework: Varies from teacher to teacher. Some classes are ~5 min while others are ~1 hr.

staying on school grounds: If you leave school grounds without an excuse it results in a suspension.

coming late to class: Varies from teacher to teacher. Ie, i start 2nd prd and i can be late 1 minute and still be fine. But math class (3rd prd) if your late 1 second, you get sent to lockout.

walking in the halls during class (for exmaple if going to the restrooms):
ehh...they're pretty lenient. for example, if you dress early for PE they don't mind if you wonder around till the bell rings.

-attendance: Absent notes are needed, otherwise you get detention. In addition, you have to call in before 9am on the day you are absent, and if not the school calls your home or parent's work places to ensure that you aren't cutting. Also, students must be present for 80% of any course or else they fail (unless due to sickness). Also, if you are absent or late one day, you can't participate in extracurricular activities for that day.

homework: Generally, points off the homework grade. A lot of my teachers place great emphasis on homework.

staying on school grounds: required. Seniors must have permission from their parents to leave, and can leave after their last class, but may not stay in the parking lot or come back into the building until ten minutes after school lets out (for sports/extracurriculars).

coming late to class: A lot of teachers will give you a warning, but the rule is an infraction. (3 infractions= 1 detention.)

walking in the halls during class: It's not aloud. You must have a pass from a teacher to be walking in the halls during class, though it's enforced only by certain hall monitors (who are teachers with free periods). If you have a study you must be in your assigned room, and if you have a free you must be in the library or cafeteria.

My school also has uniforms, and they enforce that a lot. No Uggs, no opened toed shoes, no different colored shirts under the school shirt, no pants (girls), everyone must wear black shoes, no hooded sweatshirts or unauthorized (non-school) sweaters. The boys: no jewelry, no long hair. The girls: no extravagant jewelry, no outlandish makeup, skirts can only be one inch above the knee (they will measure). Violation of the rules results in an infraction or the student will not be allowed to go to any classes until they change (if it's serious, and they get a zero for the missed classes/assignments). The uniforms have gotten much stricter in the last few years, unfortunately.

Attendance: You can get detentions for absences and tardies, but they won't affect your grades.

Homework: School-wide policy of 50% off late homework, teachers generally grade everything, and homework comprises 25-75% of the grade.

Staying on school grounds: I don't really know, but we're not supposed to leave during lunch.

Walking in halls: No policy, no one is walking the halls asking for passes or anything. Teacher of juniors and seniors let you leave class whenever you need to without asking, usually.
