how strict really is the january 1st "postmark" deadline?

yeah... I know there's a thread on this and everything, but are colleges REALLY strict on this postmark deadline? since the UPS is closed on the 2nd, can we send some last-minute supplements or whatever on the 3rd/4th?

will they just take one glance at the postmark dead and be like "pshh, this kid OBVIOUSLY does not care about our school if its this late. let's toss it"

?!?? I'm PANICKING because the mailman just rolled by our house like ONE HOUR ago and I've just finished one last supplement... and it's snowing torrents so my parents DON'T want to go out and the post office is closed... ahhhh...

You'll be fine if you miss the deadline by a few days.

Also - the post office at the airport is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week regardless of holidays and stuff.

It depends on the school. Some are strict; some are not. (And you've now learned why you shouldn't wait until the last minute - Murphy's Law, remember?)

If it helps, Duke extended its deadline to Jan. 12 (they have to RECEIVE it by Jan. 12)

By the way, why don't you apply online? That will help you avoid the postmark crunch.

I have almost the same question, but my question reguards the supplemental materials like transcripts and LOR's. Do they need to be in at the deadline, or is there a week grace period?

Thanks

The supplemental materials like transcripts and LOR's are usally not submitted by the student but the school or recommender and they are not held to the Jan 1. deadline.

So what if you apply online then? Don't you have to submit it before midnight of the due date?

Ive missed the yale deadline, can I now print everything and send by snail mail?

I sent all my stuff in the mail. You could even send it express so they'll come before the others. As long as Yale gets it on time, I don't think it should matter too much. On the other hand, I have no evidence.

Um it has to be postmarked by Jan. 1, meaning it's too late. Contact the admissions office just in case, but Deadlines do mean something, guys.

Use the click-n-ship option at USPS.com... it will carry a date of today

My post office, the main one in the area, will postmark things anyday if you drive them there, and then will send them out by the third. If you're close to the central mail processing center for your area, you could do that. Just call first.
